Biographical Details:

The second surviving son of Philip, Jr., and Rebeckah Russell was Samuel Fleming Russell.  He was probably born in 1803 (although no exact date is known) presumably in Grayson County, Virginia, and married Susannah Rebecca Hash on April 23, 1829, in Grayson County.  Subsequently, the household of Samuel Russell appears in the 1830 US Census for Grayson County and consisted of a young adult couple and one male child of less than five years of age.  Almost certainly, this child should be identified as their oldest son, John.  Moreover, in the 1835 Personal Property Tax List, Samuel was assessed tax on one tithable and two horses.  Likewise, the household of Samuel Russell again appears in the population schedule of the 1840 US Census for Grayson County and evidently included six children in addition to the parents; however, only four of these children can be plausibly identified from subsequent census records, which suggests that, perhaps, two children of Samuel and Susannah Hash Russell died young and are otherwise unknown to history.  Concomitantly, the household of Samuel Russell also appears in the population schedule of the 1850 US Census for Grayson County and included six children, viz., John, James, Rebecca, Calvin, Riley F., and Polly M.  Several researchers identify another son, William, born January 21, 1844; however, it is likely that he and Riley were one and the same person.  (Indeed, considering various documentary and circumstantial evidence, it seems that after 1880 Riley used the name William exclusively, although his motivation for this practice is not certain.)  Apparently, sometime in the 1850's, Samuel, together with his wife and several of their children, moved to Owsley County, Kentucky.  This is supported by the appearance of the household of Samuel and Susannah Russell in the 1860 US Census for Owsley County, which at that time included their three youngest children: Riley F., age sixteen; Mary M., age twelve; and Stephen T., age nine.  (In the nineteenth century, "Polly" was a common nickname for Mary.)  In addition, it is evident that they were living in close proximity to the family of J. H. Russell, age thirty, who can be identified with confidence as John Russell, oldest son of Samuel and Susannah Hash Russell.  Concomitantly, Grayson County census records confirm that their remaining three children, James, Rebecca, and Calvin, had all married by 1860 and remained behind in Virginia.  Geographically, Owsley County is located on the Cumberland Plateau in east central Kentucky and, as such, the local landscape substanially resembles that of Grayson County, although elevations are generally lower.

Circumstantial evidence indicates that Susannah Hash Russell died in the early 1860's, probably in Owsley County, although no burial place is known, and that a few years later, perhaps, in 1865 or 1866, Samuel married a much younger woman, Mrs. Marry (or Mary) Hartsock (or Hartsook) Fleener, who is thought by later descendants to have been of Native American, viz., Cherokee, ancestry, but this remains unverified.  (Indeed, assertion of "Indian" ancestry is often an erroneous feature of oral family tradition.)  Accordingly, the household of Samuel Russell, seventy years of age, and his wife, Mary, age twenty-nine years, appears in the population schedule of the 1870 US Census for Owsley County.  In addition, this family also included the youngest son of Samuel and Susannah Russell, Stephen T., age eighteen, as well as three younger children.  Subsequently, the Russell family left Owsley County and moved to Wright County, Missouri, about 1875.  This is supported by the appearance of the household of Samuel and Mary Russell in the 1880 US Census for Wright County as resident in Boone Township and included five children of ages seven months to twelve years, which were evidently the "second family" of Samuel Fleming Russell.  In addition, a step-son, Samuel Fleener, seventeen years of age, was also included and can almost certainly be identified with "Samuel" who was resident in the household as indicated by the 1870 Owsley County population schedule.1  Again, considering geography, Wright County is located in the Ozarks of south central Missouri and although the landscape is hilly, it is much flatter than either Grayson or Owsley County.  Moreover, although not part of the very fertile tallgrass prarie, the soil is considerably more fertile and probably provided the motivation for migration of Samuel Russell and his family to this locality.  Concomitantly, Boone Township is located immediately northwest of the town of Hartville, which is the county seat.  Even so, the Russell family moved once again, perhaps, in 1880 or 1881, to Boone County, Arkansas, since their youngest son, Noah, was born in this locality in 1882.  Samuel Fleming Russell reportedly died in 1890 and was buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Boone County, although there is evidently no existing marker.  In addition, according to anecdotal family tradition he was killed in some sort of railroad accident; however, nothing definite concerning the time or place is known.  Subsequently, the population schedule of the 1900 US Census for Boone County, Arkansas, affirms that Mary Rusel (sic - Russell), a widow, was then living with two children, ages twenty-one and nineteen, in Prairie Township (which is located twelve to fifteen miles southeast of the county seat at Harrison, in the southeastern corner of the county).  Furthermore, the older of the two children was identified as "Jery" and, as such, can be identified with confidence as Samuel and Mary's second oldest son, Jeremiah.  Even so, the enumerator has unaccountably recorded the younger child as "Nora", a daughter, which is evidently erroneous since the youngest child of Samuel and Mary Hartsock Russell is known from subsequent census and civil records to have been a son, Noah.  (Indeed, close inspection of the corresponding page of the population schedule reveals that information was recorded quite sloppily and in many instances was written so poorly as to be almost illegible, which would be consistent with a high frequency of mistakes.)  Accordingly, in 1910 Mary Russell was living with the family of her youngest son, Noah; his wife, Ida; and their young son in Canadian Township in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma.  Nevertheless, later census records clearly indicate that this family had moved back to Arkansas by 1912 and, moreover, that "Marry Russell" died on January 25, 1917, in Newton County, Arkansas, and is buried in Western Grove Cemetery.  As a matter of history, although many descendants of Samuel Fleming Russell remained in southwestern Virginia, many others scattered to various localities in the Upper South, Midwest, and Pacific Northwest.2

Source Notes and Citations:
1. Various family researchers attribute five children to Samuel and Susannah Hash Russell, viz., Calvin, James, Tishie, Phina, and Ludema.  Clearly, the first two are consistent with census and civil records; however, the last three are apparently spurious and almost certainly a consequence of conflation of Samuel and Sussanah's children with the children of their son, Calvin.
Identification of Mary Hartsock as the second wife of Samuel Fleming Russell is supported by annotations to the 1860 Owsley County Kentucky Census provided by Spence family researchers as follows:
     "217/217 Travelers Rest"
Samuel RUSSELL  54  Farmer  900  500   Va   m(2) Mary HARTSOCK

Mary M    12  Va s  Mary MATILDA m Samuel D EVANS

In addition, Spence researchers also apparently cite abstracted Owsley County vital records for the year 1877:
"Riley F Russell to Elvira M Spence, c1862, s/o Samuel Russell & Susanah, d/o Jonathan Spence & Mary Holmes"
"Troy M Russell Born 3 May 1877 Parents Riley F Russell & Elvira Spence, vsb 1877"; however, no son named "Troy M." can be attributed to Riley and Elvira Russell, but this child can probably be identified with a son indicated as "Arasmus M." in the 1880 population schedule for Owsley County, Kentucky.  (unpublished notes)

*Two different birthdates have frequently been asserted by various researchers for James Preston Russell, viz., November 24, 1830, and December 5, 1831.  The latter of these appears to derive directly from family sources and, thus, would be thought to be more reliable.   Even so, his death certificate affirms the former birthdate and his death is affirmed as occuring on December 5, 1913.  Unfortunately, the inscription on his tombstone affirms dates:  November 1, 1831 and December 6, 1913.  Although discrepancy in the two dates of death does not seem serious, in the case of James' birthdate, it may be supposed that birth and death dates have been conflated by some researchers (and, perhaps, even family members).  This might be further indicated by the appearance of "1" and "3" as the last two digits of both 1831 and 1913.  In any case, the death certificate should be accepted as authoritative.
**Many researchers identify the first wife of James Preston Russell as Polly Haga; however, contemporary census records indicate her first name as "Mary".  Even so, this is not necessarily inconsistent nor indicative of error, since in the nineteenth century nicknames such as "Polly", "Patsy", "Betsy", etc. were often applied to women named Mary, Martha, Elizabeth, etc.  In addition, various researchers indicate that James Preston Russell and Polly Haga were married January 3, 1855; however, the correct date seems to be January 31, 1856.
#The surname of the second wife of James Preston Russell is indicated variously as "Hash", "Welsh", or "Welch".  Possibly, she was previously married and confusion between her married and maiden names is the reason for this uncertainty.  In any case, "Welch" seems to be the correct alternative.
#*Gary Dewey, a researcher of the Russell family, includes William, born January 21, 1844, as a son of Samuel and Susannah Hash Russell and stated as his source "Pamela Carico of Greenbrier, TN."  He further indicated that: "Information received from Mrs. Harrington of Elk Creek, Va" and "Mr. G. Russell 709 E. Main St., Middletown, Md. 21769-7802".  Evidently, this information derives directly from family sources, and, accordingly, it is entirely possible that it is correct.  Consequently, it would seem reasonable to suppose that William and Riley Russell were twins; however, this is never affirmed in population schdules of 1850 and 1860 as would be expected and in which William did not appear at all, but Riley was indicated as six and sixteen years of age, respectively, i.e., born in 1843 or 1844.  Therefore, it would seem more likely that William and Riley were one and the same person since their ages are essentially identical.  Indeed, this is supported by the population schedule of the 1900 US Census for Crittenden County, Kentucky, in which William F. Russell indicated that he had been born in Virginia in January of 1844.  Nevertheless, these presumptions remain debatable and should not be considered as established fact and, beyond this, precise details remain extremely umcertain.

Second Generation

1. John H. Russell probably married his wife. Susannah Haldoway, in Virginia; however, the location remains uncertain.  Apparently, after their marriage they moved to North Carolina for a short time but, then to Owsley County, Kentucky about 1856 or 1857, and after that to Marion County, Illinois, sometime before 1880.  John died in Marion County in 1885 and his widow remarried a widower, Winston Wooten, on September 28, 1893; however, Mr. Wooten died in 1899 and it does not appear that his second wife survived him.

1-1. Leroy Columbus Russell, born 3 Apr 1855 in NC, died 28 Apr 1935, buried East Lawn Cem., Marion Co., IL; married 22 May 1880 in Marion Co., IL, Sarah E. Green, born Mar 1862 in VA (later WV), died 1951, buried East Lawn Cem., Marion Co., IL.  They had Lydia Russell.
1-2. Emily J. Russell, born 1857/1858 in KY.  Apparently died as a child before 1870.
1-3. Permelia V. Russell, born ~May 1860 in KY.
1-4. Robert M. Russell, born May 1863 in KY; married on 21 Sep 1893 in Champaign Co., IL, Laura Robbins, born May 1872 in IN.  They had Barney M. Russell.
1-5. Ellen Russell, born 4 Jul 1865 in KY, buried Iuka Cem., Marion Co., IL; married on 1 Mar 1883 in Marion Co., IL, Charles M. James, born 7 Dec 1857 in IL, died 19 Feb 1901 in Marion Co., IL, buried Iuka Cem.  They had Everet and Earl James
1-6. Julina Russell, born 1866/1867 in KY.  Apparently died young before 1880.
1-7. David A. Russell, born ~Dec 1869 in KY.  Apparently died as a child before 1880.
1-8. Samuel F. Russell, born ~Dec 1869 in KY.  Apparently died as a child before 1880.

2. James Preston Russell and Mary (Polly) Haga were married in Grayson County by James Levsay  She was reportedly the daughter of Henry Haga; however, this has not been confirmed.  They almost certainly settled in Grayson County after their marriage; however, according to the population schedule of 1860, their youngest daughter had been born in Kentucky, which suggests that they moved to Kentucky about 1857, but returned to southwestern Virginia before Polly evidently died in the early 1860's.

2-1. Samuel F. Russell, born 6 Oct 1856 in Grayson Co., VA; married on 14 Mar 1872 in Grayson County, VA, Mary E. Cole, born Aug 1851 in VA  They had James J., Newton C., Emma A., Laura D., William O., Jestin, Joseph, Charles, and Jennette Russell.
2-2. Elizabeth Russell, born 1857/1858 in KY.
Subsequently, James Preston Russell married Mary Welch.  They evidently remained resident in Virginia until at least 1880.  Unfortunaely, neither James nor his wife have been found in subsequent census records.  Even so, James Preston Russell died in Crittenden County, Kentucky, and his death certificate attests his parents as Samuel F. Russell and Sussana Hash.  Accordingly, this suggests that he possibly moved to Kentucky about 1900, perhaps, after the death of his wife, but this is merely speculation.
2-3. Orlena (Arlene) C. Russell, born 2 Oct 1865 in VA, died 1957, buried Attoway Cem., Smyth Co., VA; married on 27 Nov 1884 in Grayson Co., VA, Soliman S. Bates, born 16 Jul 1862 in NC, died 7 Apr 1923, buried Attoway Cem., Smyth Co., VA.  They had Elijah E., James Henry, John W., Mary V., and Lulu M. Bates.
2-4. Julia A. Russell, born 1867/1868 in VA; married on 21 Aug 1893 in Grayson Co., VA, John Floyd Carrico.  He was evidently her first cousin.
2-5. James L. Russell, born 1869/1870 in VA; married on 10 Nov 1890, B. L. Conkling.
2-6. Jackson B. Russell, born 1871/1872 in VA; married on 29 Nov 1894 in Grayson Co., VA, C. A. Nelson.
2-7. Columbus Russell, born Aug 1876 in VA; married (1) on 11 Nov 1894 in Grayson Co., VA, Surphina Russell.  She was evidently his first cousin and they had Arthur, Calvin, Madge, Agnes, Edgar, Sallie R., and Creed Russell.
f. Jeffrey Weaver summarizes the military service of James Russell as follows:
"RUSSELL, JAMES E., 31, Shoemaker, 1860 GCC HH#296, Co. I, 51st Va. Inf., Enl. on 8/1/62 in Grayson Co., Va.  Detailed as a shoemaker from 12/17/62 to 2/28/63 at Dublin Depot."
In this, as in a number of contemporary records, James Russell's middle initial is given as "E".  Nevertheless, his middle name is generally thought by later family members to have been "Preston".  Clearly, this name is inconsistent with the initial, but the reason for this discrepancy is, as yet, not known.  (Jeffrey Weaver (tr), New River Notes, www.newrivernotes.com/index.htm, 2015.)

g. The birth of Orlena Russell was listed twice in the birth register of Grayson County for the same date in both 1864 and 1866; however, other researchers indicate 1865 as the more likely year for her birth.  (Register of Births, 1853-1870, Grayson Co., VA, pgs. 24, 55, and 61, Library of Virginia, Richmond, VA, (microfilm: roll - City and County Records #19)(Billie White and Ginger Ballard (comp), Jeffrey Weaver (tr), New River Notes, www.newrivernotes.com/index.htm, 2015.)

h. Children of James Russell are affirmed by census records; however, his indicated age is highly inconsistent, as was not unusual in nineteenth century records.  (1860 US Census Population Schedule for Grayson County, Virginia, National Archives, Washington DC:  pg. 42, (microfilm roll - M653_1348; img. 43) & 1880 US Census Population Schedule for Grayson County, Virginia, National Archives, Washington DC:  pg. 416A, (microfilm: roll T9_1368; img. 268).)

3. Rebecca Russell married Abel Carrico IV and after their marriage, they settled in Grayson County, Virginia, in the vicinity of Carsonville, which is about eight miles west of the city of Galax.  Evidently, they remained resident in this locality for the rest of their lives.  They were the parents of at least twelve children.

3-12. John Floyd (Johnny) Carrico, born 18 Jun 1876 in Grayson Co., VA, died 1 May 1932 at Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC, buried Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cem.; married (1) on 21 Aug 1893 in Grayson Co., VA, Julia A. Russell.  She was evidently his first cousin and they had  Lula Carrico, but later divorced; married (2) on 20 Feb 1897 in Grayson Co., VA, Frances (Fanny) C. Hill, born 7 Aug 1873, died in childbirth 16 Jul 1905 in Grayson Co., VA.  They had Clara A., Ruby, Earl, and Ethel Carrico; married (3) on 27 Oct 1905 in Grayson Co., VA, Mrs. Elizabeth (Bettie) Hill Cooley, born 18 Jan 1878 in Grayson Co., VA, died 7 Mar 1955 in Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC, buried Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cem.  She was a younger sister of his second wife and they had Ralph Russell, Nellie Esther, Oscar Abel, Albert, John Floyd, Nettie Mae, and Maggie Lula Carrico.
After her husband's death, Rebecca evidently married James Holmes Seayers.  Furthermore, it is believed that he was twenty-five years younger than his putative wife.  Alternatively, some researchers assert Joseph P. Braysons as Rebecca's second husband.  Moreover, he is believed to have been about two years older that she was, which would seem much more conventional.  Even so, there is little if any evidence for this identification.  In any case, Rebecca's second marriage was quite short since she died no more than three years afterward.

##This child is reported to have been stillborn on November 25, 1856, by various researchers; however, the birthdate of Samuel M. Carrico is also reported as November 23, 1856.  This is consistent with census records and suggests that the unnamed child was a twin of Samuel and, furthermore, may have not been stillborn, but, survived for a short time, perhaps a day or two.
§Shirley Ramos and Patricia Kratz identify Elizabeth Carrico as Mary Elizabeth (Bettie) Carrico, born 6 Jan 1860.  However, census population schedules of 1870 and 1880 as well as compiled birth records of Grayson County do not support this and, moreover, indicate that Elizabeth C. (Billie) Carrico was born 6 Jan 1865.  It is possible that this discrepancy is indicative of two children, one of which did not survive childhood.  They also identify Susan V. Carrico, born November 18, 1870.  Indeed, this is supported by transcribed and compiled birth records; however, it would have been nearly impossible for Rebecca Carrico to have had another child, viz., Elvira, the following July.  In addition, there was already a daughter named Susan in the family; hence, notwithstanding the birth record, it seems likely that this "second Susan" is spurious.

#*Alternatively, Rebecca Russell Carrico is said by some researchers to have married James H. Sayers (or Seayers) on July 21, 1881.  He was born about 1857 and was obviously much younger than Rebecca.  In contrast, Joseph W. Braysons was born about 1830.  Since these two alternatives are mutually exclusive, it seems much more likely that she would have married the older man, although this remains to be definitively determined.

4. Calvin Wesley Russell married Irena (Rena) Ward during the decade prior to the Civil War in which he served in Company D, Thirty-seventh Virginia Cavalry of the Confederate Army.  However, he was reported "away without leave" in 1864 and was subsequently denied a pension.  Even so, this was probably not a result of cowardice, but because of the need to support his family at home.  In any case, Calvin and Irena Russell evidently remained in Grayson County, Virginia, until their deaths.

4-1. Thomas Melvin Russell, born 12 Apr 1858 in Grayson Co., VA, died 18 Dec 1949, buried Grubb's Chapel Cem., Grayson Co., VA; married on 16 Jul 1884, Lucinda Cox, born Aug 1858 in Grayson Co., VA, died 8 Apr 1938 in Grayson Co., VA, buried Grubb's Chapel Cem.  They had Morgan Leffridge and Harvey Beveridge Russell.

5. Riley-William Floyd Russell seems to have been a restless individual and the details of his life remain confused and vexing.  He first married Elvira Marilda Belle Spence when he was twenty-two years old and the family was subsequently resident in Lee County, Kentucky.  Concomitantly, the household of Elvira Russell, a widow, appeared in the population schedule of the 1880 US Census for Wolfe County, Kentucky; however, a set of twins, viz., Robert C. and Laura B., one month old, were included in the family, which would indicate that Riley could have died no earlier than the the late summer or early fall of 1879 and no later than June of 1880.  Riley and Elvira were the parents of nine surviving children, most of whom married and remained resident in Wolfe County into the first half of the twentieth century.

5-1. William Andrew J. (Jack) Russell, born Dec 1862 in KY, died 1920 in Wolfe Co., KY; married (1) Sarah B. Rudd§, born 1865 in VA, died 10 Oct 1909 in Wolfe Co., KY.  They had Maggie E., Susan M., William Edward, John Clarence, Cora A., Nora, Jewel, and Constant Russell; married (2) Anna L. Combs, born 1887/1888 in KY.
5-2. Samuel Francis Russell, born 10 Mar 1866 in in Powell Co., KY, died 17 Apr 1950 Lexington, Fayette Co., KY, buried Campton Cem., Wolfe Co., KY; married (1) 1889, Icy Elizabeth Reynolds, born Mar 1866 in KY, divorced ~1898.  They had Nannie L., Francis C., Minnie Jane, and Maggie Ann Russell; married (2) 1899/1900, Bethaniah Lydia Steele, born 17 Mar 1878 in Morgan Co., KY  They had Edna May, Francis Marion, and Charles Everett Russell; married (3) ~1918, Cora Shockleford Brewer, born 1876/1877 in KY.  They had James Henry Russell.
5-3. Jonathan Floyd Russell, born 17 Mar 1868 in KY, died 15 May 1942 in Warren Co., OH, of injuries sustained from being struck by an automobile, buried Lebanon Cem.; married ~1892, Evelyn V. Collier, born 5 Oct 1877 in VA, died 3 Mar 1957 in Warren Co., OH, buried Lebanon Cem.  They had Shiloh Harry, Lucille J., James Monroe, Troy Collier, and Earl S. Russell.
5-4. Stephen Russell, born Apr/1870 in KY.  Apparently died as a child before 1880.
5-5. James H. Russell, born 1871/1872 in KY.
5-6. Mary Susan Russell, born 31 Dec 1873 in Wolfe Co., KY, died 21 Jan 1961 in Wolfe Co., KY, buried Chambers Cem.; married on 12 Jan 1893, William Jackson Chrisman, born Jul 1860 in KY, died 12 Feb 1942 in Wolfe Co., KY, buried Chambers Cem.  They had Chloe Maude, Claude, Della J., Rolla, Marilda, Mabel, Ethel, Emory, Floyd, and Frances Chrisman.
5-7. Erasmus Monroe (Dick) Russell, born 3 May 1877 in Owsley Co., KY, died 10 Dec 1938 in Wolfe Co., KY, buried Hazel Green Cem.; married Rebecca Jane Graham§*, born 6 Dec 1883 in Wolfe Co., KY, died 26 May 1970 Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY, buried Hazel Green Cem., Wolfe Co., KY.  According to his death certificate, he was a miller and was killed accidentally by being caught in industrial machinery.  They evidently had no children.
5-8. Robert S. Russell, born 9 May 1880 in KY, died 15 Jun 1968 in Wolfe Co., KY, buried Cable Cem.; married Pearl Cable, born 1882 in KY, died 1976, buried Cable Cem., Wolfe Co., KY.  They had Taylor, Ruford and Buford (twins), Otha, Ruby, and Beulah Russell.
5-9. Laura B. Russell, born 9 May 1880 in KY.
Alternatively, Shirley Ramos and Patricia Kratz assert that Riley Russell practiced as a physician in Crittenden County, Kentucky, after the Civil War and, as such, did not die in 1879 or 1880, but, in fact, survived well into the twentieth century.  If this is so, it would seem that he must have abandoned his first wife and family.  Considering the social opprobrium associated with divorce or abandonment in nineteenth century society, in such a circumstance it is, perhaps, understandable that Elvira Spence Russell identified herself as a widow rather than a divorcee in the 1880 population schedule.  Moreover, according to subsequent census records, after 1880 Riley evidently was known as "William F. Russell", which may simply have been an alias or he may have really been named "Riley William Floyd Russell" as some researchers assert.  (Presumably the initial, "F", still denoted "Floyd", but this has not been definitively affirmed.)  In any case, it may be supposed that his adoption of a different name, irrespective of precise details, provided for an abrupt separation of identity.  Elvira Spence Russell reportedly died in 1889 in Wolfe County; however, civil records affirm that W. F. Russell married (2) Nora Alice Long in Crittenden County in April of 1888.  According to a contemporaneous marriage register, this was evidently her first marriage and was solemnized by Rev. J. M. Roberts at the home of James Long, presumably the bride's father.  Concomitantly, a household of James Long does appear in the population schedule of the 1880 US Census for Crittenden County, but includes no daughter, Nora.  Conversely, a daughter, Nora, does appear in the household of Charles C. and Moliie Long; however, she is only one year of age and could hardly have married W. F. Russell in 1888.  Perhaps, a more likely alternative is provided by the household of James C. and Emily Long, which did include a daughter, Nora A., evidently born about 1868 and which was resident in nearby Posey County, Indiana.  Moreover, the census record further implies that the Long family had originated in Kentucky and had moved to Indiana about 1878.  Although speculative, it would seem plausible that after 1880 they subsequently moved back to Kentuclky, presumably, Crittenden County.  Within this context, Ramos and Kratz further indicate that William and Nora Russell were the parents of three children, viz., William, Effie, and Cora; however, nothing further is known.  (Indeed, with the exception of the Crittenden County marriage register and, perhaps, vague family tradition, no definitive evidence has been found for William's second marriage or putative children in civil or census records.)
Subsequently, William F. Russell, married (3) Mrs. Alice Mariah Ordway Sanderson in Crittenden County in April of 1893.  She was either a widow or divorcee and had at least two daughters from her previous marriage.  It is, perhaps, significant that according to family tradition William and Alice Russell lived in Crayne, Kentucky, since his brother, James Preston Russell, seems to have lived in (or at least visited) this locality after the turn of the century.  Indeed, in 1913 "Dr. William F. Russell" of "Crayne, Ky" was the informant for the death certificate of James Preston Russell.  (Concomtantly, the attending physician was Vernon R. Fox, M. D.)  Even so, perhaps, about 1917, W. F. and A. M. Russell migrated to the Yakima Valley in the State of Washington and in 1920 were resident with six children in the town of Zillah in Yakima County.  Evidently they remained in this locality for the rest of their lives.
5-10. Ervin James Russell, born 19 Sep 1893 in Crittenden Co., KY, died 27 Feb 1957, buried Zillah Cem., Yakima Co., WA; married Marian F. Follansbee, born 20 Sep 1901 in WI, died 15 Jan 1996, buried Zillah Cem., Yakima Co., WA.  They had Robert J., David Ervin, and Ethelwyn Russell.
5-11. Susan Jane Russell, born 11 Oct 1895 in Crittenden Co., KY, died 30 May 1993 in Yakima Co., WA, buried Zillah Cem.; married (1) on 30 Nov 1911 in Crittenden Co., KY, Robert Lee Donaldson, born 9 Aug 1884 in Caldwell Co. KY, died 4 Aug 1943 in Yakima Co., WA, buried Zillah Cem.  They had Jack, Robbie, Blanton, Russell, and Zelda Donaldson; married (2) ***** Robson.

5-14. Ruth Virginia Russell, born ~1903 in Crittenden Co., KY; married ~1924, Lawrence Earl, born 1899/1900 in MI.  Evidently they had no children.
5-15. Sarah Evelyn Russell, born ~1907 in Crittenden Co., KY; married ~1926, Leslie H. White, born 10 Jul 1905 in WA or NH, died Oct 1978 in Clallam Co., WA.  They had Florence May, Donald L., Robert H., and Ronald White.
5-16. Mary Isabelle Russell, born Mar/Apr 1910 in Crittenden Co., KY; married ~1927, William L. (Lonnie) Amos, born 19 Feb 1905 in MO, died 6 Mar 1968 in Yakima Co., WA, buried Tahoma Cem.  They had Betty Jane Amos.
5-17. Elsie Lorena Russell, born 27 Dec 1911 in Crittenden Co., KY, died Nov 1988 in Chelan Co., WA; married James S. Perkins.
§It has been asserted that the first wife of Jack Russell was Sarah B. Halsey; however, her death record clearly indicates that her parents were James and Nancy Rudd.  (The names James and Eveline Halsey appear on the line above, which probably accounts for the error.)

7. Stephen Troy Russell is believed to have married Mary C. Warren in Owsley County, Kentucky, in 1875.  Nevertheless, the death certificate of their daughter, Minnie, filed in the State of Missouri in 1948, affirms that she had been born in Wright County in 1876.  Therefore, it may be supposed that Stephen T. Russell and his wife went to Missouri with his father, step-mother, and several half siblings shortly after their marriage.  Sadly, Mary Warren Russell died before 1880 (probably in Missouri) and Stephen T. Russell evidently returned to Kentucky with his young daughter since he appeared in the 1880 population schedule as a widower, age twenty-nine, occupation jeweler, and resident in the town of Booneville boarding in the household of Hiram Hogg.  Concomitantly, Minnie Russell, age three, was living nearby with her grandparents, Burgoine and Priscilla Warren.

7-1. Minnia Warren Russell, born 21 Dec 1876 in Hartville, Wright Co., MO, died 13 Nov 1948 in Howell Co., MO, buried in Oak Lawn Cem.; married on 24 Mar 1897 in Howell Co., MO, John W. Brown, born Jun 1874 in AR.  They divorced before 1910, but had Minnella Mable Brown.
Subsequently, Stephen T. Russell married Nancy Eveline McDaris about 1882, probably in Missouri, but the location is uncertain.  In any case, by 1900 they were living in the city of West Plains, Missouri, in Howell County and he was a merchant jeweler.  Census records further reveal that they had five children only two of which survived to adulthood.  Moreover, Steven T. Russell seems to have remained in the jewelry business for his entire life.  Indeed, his death certificate indicates his address as 419 Summit St., West Plains, Missouri, his place of birth as Grayson County, Virginia, his father's name as Samuel F. Russell, his occupation as retired jeweler, and names as informant, his son Troy Russell of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
7-2. Troy Russell, born 13 Sep 1891 in Howell Co., MO, died Nov 1978 in Baltimore, MD; married Grace E. *****, born 1898/1899 in PA.  They had Nancy L., Charles T., and William F. Russell.
7-3. Francis (Frank) Eugene Russell, born 8 May 1894 in Howell Co., MO, died 15 Sep 1917 in West Plains, Howell Co., MO, buried in Oak Lawn Cem.; married on 1 Feb 1913 in Howell Co., MO, Inez M. Leathers, born 17 Apr 1894, died 1961.  They apparently had no children.
