Biographical Details:
Charles Russell, known familiarly as "Charlie", was the youngest son of Lewis and Mary Ann Russell. He was born in Henry County, Iowa, in August of 1867. As a very young child, he moved with his family to Gentry County, Missouri, where he evidently spent his childhood. Charles Russell and Belle Mae Workman were married in Gentry County on December 30, 1891, by Rev. A. J. Brock. It appears that their first two children were born in Gentry County, but they evidently moved to the Oklahoma Territory with other members of the Russell family, viz., Charlie's odler brothers, Ed and Lute, in the late 1890's. Indeed, they appeared in the population schedule of the 1900 US Census for Dewey County living in Cleveland Township (apparently living in close proximity to the families of Charlie's older brothers, Ed, and Lute). This is further supported by a land patent issued under the authority of the Homestead Act to Charles Russell on August 21, 1905.1 The indicated parcel is located about a mile southeast of the town of Camargo, just north of the Candian River in Cleveland Township. In addition, an old photograph exists of the family standing in front a a small log house "in Oklahoma". From the appearance of the three children it would seem that the date the picture was taken must have probably been in 1905 or 1906. Evidently, although he "proved up", conditions in Oklahoma and did appeal to Charlie and the family did not remain, but returned to Gentry County before 1910. Upon their return, family tradition affirms that they settled on a farm in Jackson Township southeast of Island City near the home of his brother, John, and his family. This presumption is supported by Gentry County population schedules for both the years 1910 and 1920. Belle Workman Russell died February 6, 1925. Subsequently. according to the population schedule of the 1930 US Census for Gentry County, Charles Russell, age sixty-two, was living in Cooper Township with his niece and widowed sister, Leah M. and Delilah Johnson. However, Delilah's obituary, published upon her death in 1934, indicated Charlie's address as King City, which suggests that he had, again, returned to his farm in Jackson Township. Accordingly, a plat of Gentry County published in 1930 indicates that Charlie Russell owned forty acres in Section Thirty-one in Township Sixty-two of Range Thirty-two about two miles southeast of Island City.2 Moreover, Charlie Russell married Gertie Ann Rudkin King, a local widow, in January of 1940. She was about twenty years his junior and had been married previously to Benjamin King, who had died in January of 1936 As might be expected, Charlie and Gertie had no children of their own. Charles Russell died in St. Joseph, Missouri, at the home of his daughter, Ella Barker, on January 25, 1956.3Source Notes and Citations:
