Biographical Details:
The second oldest son of Timothy, Sr., and Miriam Sperry Perkins was Jared, who was born in Connecticut on January 28, 1766.1 He undoubtedly accompanied his parents and other relatives when they moved from Connecticut to North Carolina about 1772. Although the details of his parents' deaths are not at all clear, it seems probable that Jared was living in close proximity to some of his other brothers as well as his uncle, Joseph Perkins, in Wythe, later Grayson, County, Virginia, in the early 1790's.2 Accordingly, the name "Jerard Pirkins" (i.e., Jared Perkins) appeared in the 1793 Personal Property Tax List for Wythe County, Virginia, and indicated an assessment for one tithable, two horses, and no slaves. Furthermore, the list indicated that he was then resident in the part of Wythe County that was later organized as Grayson County. Within this context, it is probable that Phebe Russell and Jared Perkins were married about 1792 in Virginia. Her identity has not been definitively established; however, it seems likely that she was the daughter of one of the Russell brothers that are thought to have immigrated to southwestern Virginia from England at about the same time that the extended Perkins-Sperry family settled in North Carolina. Indeed, there were several more intermarriages between these families in later generations and the two extended families appear to have remained associated even as younger members migrated west from Virginia to Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri.3Source Notes and Citations:In any case, Jared Perkins was a taxpayer in Grayson County by 1805 and that year was assessed tax on one tithable and two horses and also on two land parcels of seventy-two acres each. On August 27 of the following year, i.e., 1806, he was appointed to a road crew in the area of Fox and Wilson Creeks. On May 26, 1808, a land patent was issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia to Jared Perkins for one hundred and forty acres lying in the drainage of Wilson Creek in Grayson County.4 The survey for the parcel was dated June 7, 1798, which may be a better indicator of when the land was actually occupied. He was, again, assessed tax on one tithable and two horses in 1810 and appointed to a road crew in May of 1812. The household of "Jarad Purkins" (i.e., Jared Perkins) was listed in the population schedule of the 1820 US Census for Grayson County and included thirteen or fourteen individuals. These cannot be identified with any certainty, but there were apparently two older adult couples, i.e., forty-five years of age and older, of which one surely must have been Jared and Phebe. In addition, at least some of their children must have been among the younger members of the household. Iin 1824, Jared Perkins was assessed tax on three tithables and six horses and, subsequently, on three tithables and three horses in 1828. Apparently, he was appointed overseer of a road crew in the 1820's, but was able to resign this position in November of 1826, which undoubtedly came as a great relief because, although the County Court generally did not pay citizens for road work, it did fine them if they failed in their duty to keep roads in repair. The household of "Jerrad Purkins" (i.e., Jared Perkins) appeared in the 1830 Grayson County population schedule and consisted of ten individuals, one of which was apparently an elderly lady between eighty and ninety years of age. Obviously, she cannot be identified with Phebe Russell Perkins and it is possible that she was her widowed mother; however nothing definitive is known. In addition, there were two other older adults living in the household, i.e., a man between sixty and seventy and a woman between fifty and sixty, which obviously correspond to Jared and Phebe Perkins themselves. The seven remaining individuals were likely their children or, perhaps, in-laws or grandchildren; however, exact identifications cannot be made. "Jarrard Purkins" (i.e., Jared Perkins) was assessed tax in Grayson County on one tithable and one horse in 1835. However, no listing for Jared Perkins can be found in the 1840 US Census for Grayson County, but in the 1850 Grayson County population schedule he was apparently living in the household of his son, Hezekiah Perkins. Moreover, his age was given as eighty-four and his birthplace as Connecticut, which is in exact agreement with settled family tradition as well as published research. Jared Perkins died January 30, 1851, in Grayson County and is reported to have been buried in the Little Wilson Methodist Church Cemetery, but there seems to be no presently existing marker.

**A land patent for seventeen acres was granted by the Virginia Land Office to Jerod (i.e., Jared) Perkins on October 2, 1854. Since, the survey was dated June 29, 1850, it is possible that this was Jared Perkins, son of Timothy, Sr., and Miriam Sperry Perkins, who did not die until 1851. However, it is more likely that it was his grandson, Jared Perkins, son of Joseph and Mary Perkins. In any case, the precise circumstances surrounding this patent are unknown; however, one possible motivation is that, although by this time such a small parcel had probably been long informally attached to land holdings of some member of the Perkins family, imperfection in previous surveys may have left it formally unclaimed. Therefore, the resulting patent possibly corrected a defective title.
# She was the widow of James Basil Russell. In the 1870 Grayson County population schedule, Rebeckah Russell, mother of James Basil and widow of Philip Russell, Jr., was living in the household of Hiram and Matilda Perkins. In addition to these relationships, it is likely that Rebeckah was the first cousin, or, perhaps, even sister of Hiram's grandmother, Phebe Russell Perkins. (link)a.
