Biographical Details:

Frances Ann Miller was born in Kentucky on August 15, 1814.  She was the oldest child of John W. and Hester (Hessey) Sherwood Miller.  It appears that she was familiarly called "Ann" and, hence, may have alternatively been known as Ann Frances, as well as Frances Ann.  It seems quite likely that she was the namesake of her maternal great-grandmother, Frances Linthicum, as well as, evidently, her grandmother, Ann Sherwood.  Robert J. Austin and Frances Ann Miller were married in Casey County, Kentucky, probably about 1836.  (It has been reported by family researchers that they were married August 7, 1829; however, this date seems too early, although the month and day could well be correct.)  Moreover, the household of Robert Austin appeared in the population schedule of the 1840 US Census for Casey County and consisted of a young adult couple both between twenty and thirty years of age, along with a small female child of less than five years.  Clearly, this is in close accord with the family of Robert and Frances Ann Austin. (Concomitantly, the household of Hessy Miller appeared on the line of the population schedule immediately preceding, thus, indicating close proximity).  Within this context, the wife of Robert J. Austin has been identified as "Ann Frances Evans" in an article written by Mr. Bert Austin and published in 1984 in Austins in America.1  Even so, it is clearly stated in this same article that Robert and Ann Austin sold their interest in the estate of  John W. Miller, deceased, to Johnston E. Miller of Casey County on 20 September 1847 and subsequently moved that same year to Albany, Missouri.  (This is an anachronism: although Albany was laid out in May of 1845, the town was known as Athens until the name was changed by an act of the Missouri Legislature in 1857 to resolve confusion in mail delivery with another community of the same name located in Clark County.2)  Furthermore, the account specifically stated that it was Ann who relinquished her right of inheritance.  Therefore, it would seem certain that John W. Miller was the father of Ann Austin and, thus, that her maiden name was originally Miller, not Evans.  Indeed, this conclusion is definitively confirmed by the archived death certificate of her son, John Henry Austin, which explicitly stated that his mother was "Francis Miller".  (It is plausible, but not likely that she was widowed before her marriage to Robert Austin and that Evans was her name from this previous marriage.)

As asserted by the previous citation, the household of Robert and Frances Ann Miller Austin was resident in Gentry County, Missouri, according census population schedules for 1850, 1860, and 1870.  Indeed, their first four children were born in Kentucky, but the remaining five were born in Missouri.3  It appears that the family lived in the northern part of Athens Township.  Both Robert and Ann Austin died in 1871 (February 25 and December 24, respectively) and were buried in the City Cemetery in the town of Albany.

1. Bert Addis Austin, "The Descendants of John Austin and Ann Baden of Albemarle County, Virginia", Austins in America, August 1984:  pg. 117. - "J36. Robert J.3 Austin (Jonas R.,2 John1) was born 23 December 1814 in Casey County, Kentucky.  He was married to Ann Frances Evans, born 15 August 1814.  Robert and Ann Austin were of Casey County when they sold their interest in the estate of John W. Miller, deceased,  to Johnston E. Miller of Casey County on 20 September 1847, and Ann relinquished her right of inheritance to lands conveyed in the deed, and moved that same year to Albany, Missouri.  Robert died 25 February 1871, Ann on 24 December 1871, both are buried in City Cemetery, in the southern part of Albany.  Their children in my records are shown here, although it is possible that they had more children in Missouri: - J361. [daughter], b. 1830-35: was age 5 and under 10 in 1840 Census for Casey Co. - J362. John H., b. 18 January 1844 - J363. Robert, b. circa 1865??"  This account, contains some factual errors.  First of all, as noted above, it is certain that the maiden name of Ann Austin was Miller, not Evans.  Secondly, it also seems very likely that Johnston E. Miller was actually Elijah Johnson Miller, that is to say, the younger brother of Ann Austin.  Moreover, he also is known to have emigrated to Gentry County sometime around 1850.  Finally, Robert J. and Ann F. Austin did indeed have several more children in Missouri, who can be identified from the 1850, 1860, and 1870 US Census records for Gentry County as Mary Jane, Betsey A., John H., Sarah F., Nancy Ellen, Almira, Margaret, Hester, and Robert J.

     "Albany (or Athens)
The town of Athens, now known as Albany, the county seat of Gentry County, was laid out in May, 1845, by Elisha Cameron, the commissioner of the county seat...
The original proprietor of the quarter section of land, upon which Athens was located, was John Roberts...Roberts sold his interest in the land to William Dailey, from Ohio, in 1842...The first house erected in the town after the location of the county seat, was that of Elijah P. Howell. It was a log house with a shed attached...Howell built this for a business house, and sold goods and general merchandise, being the first merchant who sold goods in Athens...
The first blacksmith was John W. Shockley. The first shoemaker was James Shelby.
There was a post-office in Clark County, MO, called Athens, and this being also the county seat of Gentry County, the mail intended for Athens, Gentry County was occasionally sent to Athens Post Office, Clark County. In order to obviate the difficulties, which grew out of a similarity of names in these post-offices, the name of Athens, Gentry County, was changed in 1857, by special act of the legislature, to Albany, which name the county seat has borne ever since.
The town of Athens was incorporated on the 25th day of February, 1857, by the legislature. (--History of Gentry and Worth Counties, pp. 124, 125, 126, 128. Also Conrad, Vol. 1, p. 16.)"

3. Twelve of the heirs of the estate of Elijah J. (Jonse) Miller can be identified as children and grandchildren of Robert and Frances Ann Austin.  (The remaining heirs were Jonse's brother and sister, Thomas and Eliza, and.the six children of John and Elizabeth Miller Evans.)   A descendancy for the family of Robert and Frances Austin has been constructed from census and civil records, as well as other independent sources:

Second Generation

1. Mary Jane Austin was the third wife of Horace Graves, but he was her only husband.  His second wife, Eluzabeth, died December 14, 1870, at the age of 30 years, 3 months, and 11 days and was buried in Liberty Cem., Daviess Co., Missouri*.  She had also been married previously and had at least four children from this marriage, viz., John, Mary, Ann, and William Patton, between six and twelve years of age, who were living in the Graves household in 1870.  In addition, Horace and Elizabeth evidently had two daughters of their own, viz., Eliza and Emily, who were between one and three years old at this time.  Horace's first wife, Mary A, Burton, died in 1865 at the age of twenty-nine years and was also buried in Liberty Cemetery.  They had at least four children, viz., George William (Willie), Harriet Francis, Mary Adaline, and Martha Graves.  According to the population schedule of the US Census, Horace Graves was a minister; however, no specific denomination is indicated.  Sadly, in 1910 Mary J. Graves was a elderly widow with no living children, boarding in the household of J. W. McDaniel in the village of Pattonsburg.

1-1. Laura E. Graves, born 1 Sep 1872 in Butler Twp., Harrison Co. MO, died 15 Oct 1895, and buried in Liberty Cem., Daviess Co., MO.  She evidently never married.
1-2. Dora Graves, born ~1874 in Butler Twp., Harrison Co. MO,  married Charles E. Hayden.
1-3. (unnamed son), died 20 Dec 1876, buried in Liberty Cem., Daviess Co., MO.
*Liberty Cemetery is located about a  mile north of the village of McFall, Missouri.  The boundary between Gentry and Daviess Counties coincides with the western edge of the cemetery; hence, although the cemetery is actually located in Daviess County, it is frequently misattributed as located in Gentry County.`

2. Elizabeth (Betsey) Ann Austin married Samuel W. Clark**, probably in Gentry County.  According to the population schedule of the 1880 US Census, S. W. Clark was a lawyer.  Indeed, published histories indicate that he was prominent in civic affairs of Gentry County in the last half of the nineteenth century.  In particular, he and L. H. Peery were commissioned by the county court to procure materials and oversee construction of a new courthouse to replace the previous structure that was demolished by a violent windstorm on July 13, 1883.  The building was completed and accepted on June 5, 1885.

4. Sarah F. Austin and Junius C. Thomas, married about 1875, almost certainly in Gentry County.  Subsequently, they moved to Cass County, Missouri, and in 1900 were evidently living on a farm in Grand River Township.  Even so, by 1910 the family was living in Yates Center, Kansas, and by 1920 they had moved to the larger town of Iola about twenty miles to the east.  Moreover, population schedules of 1910, 1920, and 1930 indicate that Junius was a "real estate agent"; an occupation which he apparently pursued for the remainder of his life.

4-1. Perry E. Thomas, born 1876/1877 in KY.

5. Nancy Ellen Austin#* and John W. Baldock evidently settled in the Oklahoma Territory after their marriage at the time it was opened for settlement in 1889.  Subsequently, they opened a hardware store in Oklahoma City.  John Baldock died in 1905, but Nancy remained living in Oklahoma City until her death in 1935.  They had no known children.

#* "87 year old '89er died at her home 9814 NW 8th St.  She and her husband had come to Oklahoma from Missouri.  They first settled on a claim a mile and a half east of the present site of the capitol.  Later the Baldocks moved to OKC and opened a hardware store in the vicinity of Reno St and S Harvey Ave.   Survived are two nieces Mrs. E. L. Wilson & Mrs Fannie Morris."  Extract from an unidentifed Oklahoma City newspaper.  Of course, 1889 was the year the unassigned lands in the Oklahoma District were opened for settlement.

6. Almira Patton Austin is believed to have married Peter Birch##; however, no civil records have been found that confirm this.  Indeed, Almira was evidently widowed at a young age and remained living in Gentry County until her death at an age of fifty-three years.

6-1. Dora Birch, born 1871/1872 in MO.
6-2. Fannie Birch, born 1874/1875 in MO.
## Almira Austin's husband is identified as Peter Birch.  They apparently married in 1871 since since she was reportedly twenty years old at the time of her marriage.  Concomitantly, the 1870 Gentry County population schedule indicates that in June of that year she was living with her older sister and brother-in-law, Samuel and Elizabeth Austin.  However, in 1880 she appears as a widow with two small children living in the town of Albany.  Therefore, it would seem that Almira's husband died young in the 1870's.

7. Margaret Belle Austin§ married William H. Davidson§* in Gentry County, perhaps, about 1875 and they apparently settled in the town of Albany.  Accordingly, census records indicate that William was not a farmer, but a druggist and real estate agent.  Moreover, in 1920, William H. and Margaret Austin Davidson were living with Junius and Sarah Austin Thomas and their two daughters in a single household in Allen County, Kansas.  Of course, Margaret and Sarah were sisters.  The following year, Margaret Davidson reportedly died in Oklahoma City.  William had evidently returned to Gentry County by 1930, but in 1940 was living in the Masonic Home of Missouri in St. Louis, where he died in 1944.

7-1. Joseph E. Davidson, born 10 Jan 1878 in Albany, Gentry Co., MO, died 10 Apr 1929 in Gentry Co., MO, buried Grandview Cem.; married on 21 Sep 1900, Elizabeth B. Bohannon, born Sep 1877 in MO.  They had Joseph E., Jr. and Hartwell B. Davidson.
7-2. Effie Davidson, born 26 May 1879 in Gentry Co., MO, died 21 May 1917 in Gentry Co., MO, buried Grandview Cem.  Apparently never married.

§# "Mrs. Hesta Ansten Marsh (sic - Hester Austin Marsh) died at 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at her home, 2454 Campbell Street, after an illness of nine months.  She was 57 years old.  She is survived by her husband, W. S. Marsh, and by seven daughters, all grown. Funeral services will be conducted from the home at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon.  Burial will be in Mount Washington Cemetery."  Extract from an unidentifed Kansas City newspaper.  In the population schedule of 1900, Hester Marsh indicated that she was the mother of eight children, seven of which were then still living; however, only five were listed with the household.  Presumably, the remaining two daughters had already married and were living elsewhere.  Moreover, Willard S. Marsh was the brother of James A. Marsh, who married Hester's first cousin, Sarah E. Evans.  In 1910 he was a policeman in Kansas City.  (death notice: Newspaper unk.)

9. Robert Johnston Austin, Jr. married Leona S. Stapleton, a member of a prominent family§§.  Robert and leona Austin evidently moved to Falls Church in Fairfax County, Virginia, before 1900,  He was employed in Washington, DC, by the government as a clerk in the Pension Office.  Concomitantly, they were living in the city of Washington on Eleventh Street in 1910.  However, by 1920, Leona was living with their son, George, in San Bernardino, California, but Robert remained behind in Washington rooming on Mozart Place.  The family was reunited in Los Angeles by 1930 and one can only suppose that Robert remained behind in Washington to meet the requirements of a government pension.  Moreover, one may further suppose that they chose to retire to California because of the temperate climate.  Robert evidently died in the 1930's, probably in California, but no date or place is known.  Concomitantly, in 1940 Leona Austin was living with her son, Edwin, in Dallas County, Texas.  Presumably, she died in Texas after 1940, but, again, nothing definite is known.

"GEORGE W. STAPLETON, M. D., the subject of this sketch, is the pioneer physician now engaged in practicing in Albany, and is one of the most prominent citizens.  He is a native of Tennessee, and was born February I5, I824.  His grandfather, Edward Stapleton, and his father, Joseph Stapleton, were both natives of Virginia.  Joseph Stapleton was married in Indiana to Miss Susannah White, a native of South Carolina.  When George was three years old his parents and the family moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, where he was reared and educated.  In 1838 they came to Missouri, and in I840 located in Daviess County, and in I846 settled in Gentry County.  He was reared on a farm, but while in Daviess County, Missouri, he learned the tanner's trade, which he followed in Albany till I850, when he began the practice of medicine under Dr. Williams.  Mr. Stapleton afterwards attended the State Medical College of St. Louis, from which institution he was graduated in 1857.  Since that time he has been actively and successfully engaged in the practice of his profession in Albany and vicinity.  He owns 105 acres of land, where he resides, and this somewhat demands his attention, as he is to a greater or less extent occupied in the stock business.  In I853 he went to California, where he was interested in mining for two years.  He is a member of Athens Lodge, No. I27, A. F. and A. M., and was one of its charter members.  Dr. S. was married April 29, I852, to Miss Mary W. Peery. They have four children:  Edwin E., Leona S., William P. and Feling P.  Mrs. S. was born in Tazewell County, Virginia, July 2, I834.  Her parents, George and Jane C. (Thompson) Peery, were both natives of Virginia."

jj. According to a news item published in the Albany Ledger on 13 Jan 1888, Robert Austin was living in Washington DC evidently working fot the Federal Government; however, on 14 Jan 1889, he was at Phil, Kentucky, which is in Casey County.  One may suppose that this was merely a short-term visit to relatives.  Concomitantly, he is reported living in Washington DC by news items dated, 3 Jan 1890, 16 Jan 1891, 1 Jan 1892, and 6 Jan 1893; however, on 5 Jan 1894 he was a "Speical Pension Examiner" in Somerset, Kentucky, the county seat of Pulaski County, which adjoins Casey County immediately to the east. Robert Austin evidently returned to the Capitol district according to items dated 8 Jan 1897 or perhaps to Fairfax County, Virginia (3 Jan 1902 and 5 Jan 1906).  These newspaper items are in close aggreement with census records.  ("WHERE THEY ARE - FROM ABSENT FRIENDS", http://carnegie.lib.mo.us/sites/default/files/wheretheyare.pdf, 2015.)
