Biographical Details:
Carter Henry Jacobs was the only known son of Roland (Roley) and Millian Ann Carter Jacobs and was born on January 27, 1795. Subsequently, his son, Joseph Gordon Jacobs, asserted in 1904, that his father had been born in Washington County; however, a death register from Carter County, Kentucky, clearly indicates Montgomery County, Virginia, as the actual location.1 Concomitantly, this same civil record indicates Job and Milley Jacobs as his parents, but since they had lived in a different locality and both had been long deceased, this inaccuracy can be considered to be of little consequence. Although it is possible that Carter Henry Jacobs was married only once, most researchers believe that he was married twice: first to Mary (Polly) Martin on April 20, 1819, in Montgomery County, Virginia, and second to Mary Ayres on February 1, 1829, in Floyd County, Kentucky. Although, not entirely certain, this implies that the youngest child of Carter and Mary Martin Jacobs would have been a daughter, Mary. Moreover, it appears that their oldest son, Claybourne, was born before the marriage in 1818. Accordingly, the population schedule of the 1820 US Census for Floyd County included the household of Carter Jacobs, which consisted of a young adult male and female couple and two male children less than ten years of age. Clearly, this implies that the couple moved from Virginia to Kentucky in 1819 or 1820, which is further supported by a land grant for fifty acres in Floyd County surveyed by Carter H. Jacobs in 1822.2 Even so, it is generally asserted by family researchers that the twins, Isabel and Joseph Gordon were born in Washington, County, Virginia, in December of 1826. Concomitantly, according to census records of 1900, Mary Jacobs Prince was born in June of 1827; however, this would have been physically impossible and, thus, it seems almost certain that she was actually born the following year. Presumably, Mary Martin Jacobs died in 1828, perhaps, at the birth of her youngest child, but this is merely speculation.. Within this context, the oldest child of Carter and Mary Ayres Jacobs would have been John Smith born in October of 1829. The household of Carter Jacobs was included in the population schedule of the 1830 US Census for Perry County, Kentucky. By inference, Carter Jacobs and his family must have moved from Floyd to Perry County in 1829 or 1830. Moreover, it is not known how long they lived there and, indeed, the census record is the only indication that they lived there at all. Even so, ignoring minor discrepancies in the ages of children, the composition of the household accords well with what is known about the family of Carter H. and Mary Jacobs. However, by 1840 it is evident from census records that the family had moved to Carter County, Kentucky, possibly near Everman or Tygart Creeks, a few miles northwest of the town of Grayson.3 The household of Carter H. Jacobs, Sr., appears in the population schedule of the 1850 US Census for Carter County and the household of Mary Jacobs in the 1860 population schedule. Obviously, this is consistent with the death of Carter H. Jacobs in Carter County on June 13, 1858. It is evident from census records that there were a number of Jacobs families living in Carter County in the mid-nineteenth century and later. These can generally be identified as descendents of Carter H. Jacobs or his uncle William Jacobs.4Source Notes and Citations:
1. "Carter Henry Jacobs was born in the state of Virginia. (I think in Washington County) on 27 January 1795. His uncle, Henry Carter, at his death willed to his namesake fifty thousand dollars. It was unknown until it was too late."
"Carter Henry Jacobs was the only son of Roley and Matilda (Millian Ann) Carter Jacobs. He, (Carter Henry Jacobs) had five sisters. One of them married Joseph Runion. I am not sure of her name. Lois (Louise) Jacobs married Lewis Bryant. She, (Lois Bryant) died in Carter County, Kentucky and was the first one buried in the Stinson graveyard. I do not recollect who the other three girls married. One of them married a Hankins if I recollect right. The[y] live in Virginia." (Joseph Gordon Jacobs, "Jacobs Family History", 1904, unpublished. He was born about 1796 and died June 13, 1858, according to the Kentucky Historical Society and their death records. I believe at that time he was living in the area around Carter Caves, Tygert or Everman Creeks. One of the books I have read mentions a Kenton Salt well which was located on Mr. Jacobs' farm about six miles northwest of Grayson in Tygert Creek. Of course I don't know if that was my Carter Jacobs but according to the 1850 census he and a William Jacobs were the only older Jacobs in Carter Co. There was a Carter Henry, Jr., who was a son with his own household." (excerpt of a letter written to Mr. James C. Powers, Assistant Librarian, Boyd County, Public Library, by Shirley Ann Jacobs Fuller, 18335 Taloga Lane, Apple Valley, CA, 92307, September 18, 1984.)

1. Claybourne R. Jacobs, born 16 Dec 1819, died 23 Apr 1849.*As noted above, most researchers assert that Carter Henry Jacobs was married twice, first to Mary Martin and second to Mary Ayres. Although, this seems probable and is apparently supported by civil records, it is always possible that Tim Mattingly is correct and that Carter Jacobs was married only once to Mary Ayres. Likewise, Mr. Mattingly also asserts that Claybourne Jacobs was born in 1819; however, it is almost certain that he was born in 1818 prior to the marriage of Carter and Mary Jacobs. Alternatively, Carter Jacobs may have had an earlier unknown wife, who died in childbirth, but there is no evidence supporting such a hypothesis.
