Biographical Details:

Some researchers give the birth year of Jane Gilby as 1704, however, it seems more plausible that she was born in Essex or King and Queen County, Virginia, about 1698 and was the daughter of John Gilby.  The identity of her mother is not definitely known, but many believe her name was Mary Dawson.  There is good evidence that Jane Gilby and Thomas Howerton, Jr., were married in Essex County in 1716.  It seems that they lived in this locality for the rest of their lives.  Moreover, it would seem from the will of her husband, Thomas Howerton, Jr., that she was no longer living at the time of his death in 1757 since he made no provision for her.
