Biographical Details:

Benjamin Franklin Evans was born in Casey County, Kentucky, in 1856 and was a son of William Roy and Elizabeth Richards Evans.  He evidently relocated to Gentry County, Missouri, in the late 1870's and married Jennie H. Ferguson about 1883 or 1884.  She was a daughter of  John and Elizabeth Catherine Cunningham Ferguson.1  Benjamin's motivation for moving from Kentucky to Missouri is not known, but a number of residents of Casey County settled in Gentry County in the last half of the nineteenth century.  Indeed, his paternal uncle, John T. Evans, had relocated to Gentry County about 1850 or 1851, but died a few years later.  Even so, his children remained in Gentry County and were evidently first cousins of Benjamin Evans.  In addition, Bemjamin's mother was from the Richards family, members of which had also previously settled in Gentry County.  Therefore, it may be supposed that he was encouraged to come to Gentry County by relatives and friends.  Moreover, it would seem that after their marriage, Benjamin and Jennie Evans settled on a small farm alomg the Middle Fork of the Grand River about three miles west of the town of Albany.2  At present, this location is on the south side of US Route 136 immediately to the west of the highway crossing of Middle Fork.  However, the river was straightened in the mid-twentieth centuryand currently runs about a quarter of a mile east of its historical location.  Within this context, according to the population schedule of the 1900 US Census for Gentry County, Jennie Ferguson Evans stated at that time that she was the mother of nine children, seven of whom were then still living.  Since, a son and daughter, Curtis and Maude, had not yet been born and an unnamed child and daughter, Pearl, had evidently already died, this is consistent with other contemporaneous civil and census records.  Therefore, eleven children can be definitively attributed to Benjamin and Jennie Ferguson Evans.  Furthermore, archived Missouri birth records reveal a female child born October 15, 1885, and further affirm that she was second in birth order.  Although, the name appearing in this source was "Demaris", subsequent census and social security records leave no doubt that this child must have been Benjamin and Jennie's daughter, Elma Grace.  Historically, it was common for names of children not to be fully fixed for some time after birth, so this discrepancy is not particularly troubling.  In addition, the birth record clearly implies that Benjamin and Jennie must have had a previous child, probably born about 1884, who did not survive.  Similarly, these same records reveal a subsequent male child, fourth in birth order.  It would seem evident that this must have been Benjamin and Jennie's son, Roy.  Concomitantly, archived Missouri birth records indicate that Roy Evans was born December 31, 1888; however, his death certificate explicitly states his date of birth as January 1, 1889.  Obviously, this inconsistency is not particularly serious although it does render his birth year somewhat uncertain.  Benjamin F. and Jennie Evans remained in Gentry County until after 1920, but by 1930 they were living with their daughter, Ruth Neighbor, in Washington Township, Buchanan County, Missouri, just east of the city of St. Joseph.3  Even so, Jennie Ferguson Evans died on March 16, 1932, in Gentry County.  Subsequently, in census records of 1940, "Frank Evans" is found lodging in the house of Sarah J. Hankins in Albany, but he is listed as married, which is inconsistent with the death of Jennie Evans in 1932.  Nevertheless, all other information is consistent with identifcation of "Frank" as Benjamin Franklin Evans.  He died on July 27, 1943, in St. Joseph and was buried with his wife in the Henton Cemetery in Gentry County.  Subsequently, his descendants became scattered with two daughters living in California.4

Cunningham, by whom he had twelve children: Nicholas \V., Sarah C., Robert, Hugh, Joseph L., Mary E., John C., Jennie, Nannie, Emma, Samuel, Ollie B.  In I860, the family moved to Gentry County, Missouri, where Mr. F. resided till the time of his death, which occurred August I4, I876.  Mrs. F. was born in Monroe County, Tennessee, September 22, 1830.  Her parents were also natives of Tennessee.  Mrs. F. resides on the farm left by her husband, which contains 290 acres.  This is conducted in an excellent manner, for which much credit is due her."  This farm consisted of separate parcels in Township Sixty-three, Range Thirty-one, Sections Twenty-six, Twenty-seven, and Thirty-three.

Moore, born 1890/1891 in MO.
5. Pearl Evans; born 18 Aug 1890, died 24 Oct 1892 in Gentry Co., MO
6. Flora Evans, born 2 Aug 1893 in Gentry Co., MO (although the census population schedule of 1900 indicates Sep 1892, but this is likely incorrect), died 13 May 1907, buried Henton Cem., Gentry Co., MO.
7. Paul J. Evans, born 27 Aug 1895 in Gentry Co., MO, died 8 Oct 1972 in St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO, buried Lone Star Cem., Gentry Co., MO; married (1) ~1922, Artist G. Wilkerson, born 1897/1898 in MO; married (2), Theo Lovell Riddle Evans, born 14 Oct 1910 in MO, died 30 Dec 1980 in Buchanan Co., MO.

*According to her death certificate, Jennie Ferguson Evans was botn in Tennessee; however, this seems unlikely if the family settled in Gentry County in 1860 as indicated in a history published in 1882.  Indeed, in the pupulation schedule of 1870, the Ferguson family was resident in Gentry County in Miller Township.  Concomitantly, the 1880 population schedule indicates that they lived in the south half of Athens Township; however, both population schedules indicate that all the children had been born in Tennessee, even those born after 1870.  Although, it is possible that Mrs. Ferguson went back to Tennessee to give birth, this does not seem likely, therefore, it is more likely that the population schedules are in error.

Second Generation

2. Elma Grace Evans** was living in her parents household in Gentry County in 1900; however, sometime before 1908 she apparently moved to southern California.  There it would seem that she met Wendell P. Buzan, whom she married in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1908.  It is not known why they returned to Missouri to be married, but the marriage licence explicitly indicates that they were both from San Bernardino, California.  Evidently, Wendell and Grace Buzan returned to the West Coast after their marriage and in 1910 were living in northern California and apparently working in the Mendocino State Hospital as attendants.  Even so, their oldest son, Wendell, Jr., was born in Oklahoma in 1914.  Subsequently, in 1920 they evidently both worked for the Southern California State Hospital in San Bernadino.  Even so, by 1930 Wendell and Grace Buzan were living in Oklahoma City with two sons and running a hotel.  However, by 1940 they had returned to California and were living in Los Angeles.  They both died in California.

2-1. Wendell Buzan, Jr., born 31 Dec 1914 in OK, died 25 May 1996 in Santa Barbara, CA.
2-2. Bryant E. Buzan, born 18 May 1920 in CA, died 9 Mar 2001 in Yavapai, AZ.
**Census records of 1910 for Mendocino County, California, indicate that Grace Evans Buzan's first name was "Olive"; however, civil and subsequent census records indicate that it was "Elma".

3. Rose M. Evans was born in Gentry County, Missouri, in 1887.  She married Sylvester O. Ragland in 1905.  They were living in Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1910 and Sylvester was employed as a railroad mail clerk.  They evidently had moved to Des Moines by 1920 and were living on Fourteenth Street.  In addition, Rose's unmarried brother, Paul, was living with them and employed as a barber.  Sylvester continued as a railroad mail clerk and in 1930 and 1940, he and Rose remained in Des Moines living on Forty-eighth Street.  Within her lifetime, Rose seems to have been known by the nickname of "Racie".  In the early 1940's the Sylvester and Rose Ragland reportedly moved back to Missouri and were living in St. Joseph when her father died in 1943.  Rose died in 1959 and Sylvester in 1961.  Both are buried in the Grandview Cemetery in Albany.  They evidently had no children of their own.

4. Roy P. Evans was born on either on New Year's Eve 1888 or New Year's Day 1889.  (Civil records affirm both dates.)  He married Susan B. Moore in Buchanan County, Missouri, in 1909.  They had one known child, Ida Bell, born about 1912.  Unfortunately, on September 15, 1913, Roy Evans was severely injured in an elevator accident in which his leg was crushed and amputated.  He survivied for ten days, but died in Ensworth Hospital in St. Joseph on September 25th.  His widow remarried to William Quigley and was living in Shawnee County, Kansas, with their daughter in 1920.  Roy's daughter, Ida Bell Evans, was living with her aunt and uncle, Ruth and Jake Neighbor, in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1930.

7. Paul J. Evans married Artis G. Wilkerson on November 3, 1920, in Albany, Gentry County, Missouri.  As affirmed by census records of 1930 and 1940, it does not seem that they had any children.  Concomitantly, the obituary of Theo L. Evans#, born 14 Oct 1910 and who died 30 Dec 1980, affirms that she was the widow of Paul J. Evans.  Even so, census records of 1930 and 1940 affirm that at that time she was evidently the wife of Emmett Evans, who was not related to the Evans family of Casey County, Kentucky.  This couple had no children in 1940.  Accordingly, one may suppose that Paul Evans' first wife, Artis, died in the early 1940's.  Likewise, Emmett Evans may have also died about the same time and Paul and Theo then married.  Theo was substantially younger than either Emmett or Paul Evans and three children can be attributed to her.  Chronologically, it would seem that they were children of Paul Evans; however, this merely remains a plausible speculation.  Paul J. Evans died 8 Oct 1972 in St. Joseph and is buried in the Lone Star Cemetery in Gentry County.

7-1. Donald P. Evans, born 16 Jul 1945 in MO, died 23 Jul 2005 in Buchanan Co., MO.
7-2. William C. Evans
7-3. Marie Evans, married ***** Robison.

8. Opal Mae Evans married Ralph M. Pray about 1919.  They had moved to San Francisco by 1920 and Ralph was listed as a student.  Even so, Opal Pray was living by herself in Kansas City in 1930.  They evidently had one son, Joseph, born about 1924 in California, but in 1930 he appears in census records as a five and a half year old child living in Gentry County, Missouri, with his uncle and aunt, Paul and Artis Evans.  Likewise, Ralph Pray was living in Klamath Falls, Oregon, in 1940 and evidently working as an architect.  It appears that he died 24 Jul 1940 and was buried in Hillside Memorial Park in San Bernardino County, California.  Opal Pray was reportedly living in El Monte, California, at the time of her father's death in 1943.  It is not known when she died or where she is buried.

8-1. Joseph E. Pray, born ~1924 in CA.
q. The family of Ralph and Opal Pray is not well documented by census records.  Perhaps, this is because they moved quite frequently and seem to have established no permanent home before 1940.  It is possible that they separated, but there is no evidence of this.  (1920 US Census Population Schedule for San Francisco County, California, National Archives, Washington DC:  pg. 60B, (microfilm: roll T625_138; img. 627); 1930 US Census Population Schedule for Jackson County, Missouri, National Archives, Washington DC:  pg. 28A, (microfilm: roll T626_1194; img. 617); & 1940 US Census Population Schedule for Klamath County, Oregon, National Archives, Washington DC:  pg. 226B, (microfilm: roll T627_3365; img. 481)).

9. Ruth D. Evans married Jacob (Jake) W. Neighbor about 1925.  They evidently lived in St. Joseph, Missouri, for the remainder of their lives.  It does not appear that they had any children of their own.  he died in 1972 and she died in 1980.  Both are buried in St. Joseph Memorial Park.

10. William Curtis Evans married Edith Lucile Cutts about 1927.  They evidently lived in St. Joseph in 1930, but returned to Gentry County later in life.  Three daughters have been attributed to them.

10-1. Joyce J. Evans, born Feb-Mar 1929 in MO.
10-2. Dorothy Evans, born 1931/1932 in MO.
10-3. Shirley Ann Evans, born 7 Jul 1940, died 3 Apr 2010, Linn Co., IA; married (1) ***** Foley, married (2) ***** Dickens.
