Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Portland State University
This is the STM lab at Portland State University:
PSU STM System The system is broken into three modular components: the
computer system, the control electronics, and the STM stage.
The following illustrates the STM modules:
This is the STM unit. The metal rings help isolate any vibration in the
acoustic box. The large cylinder contains the pre-amp circuit. The block
of electronics on the top is the STM itself. The unit hangs from three
dampening springs and has several large magnets located below the main
housing to help reduce and stabilize any movement that might occur.
Here are the internal workings of the computer end of the STM unit. Not
too much too look at. The two long board the are vertical are A/D, D/A,
and control units, the rest is just a 386 computer.
