Spring 2024
Portland State University
FINAL EXAM GUIDELINES
Taken in Class, Thursday, June 13, 10:15-12:05, Lincoln Hall 301
250
points (25% of final grade)
Exam format
- The exam will be
comprehensive; that is, the questions will cover material presented
throughout the term.
- The exam will
consist of four questions, from
which 2 will be chosen at random at the start of the class.
- Exam questions
will be shared on the final day of class, June 6. They will be linked
below.
- Exam questions
will have multiple prompts to encourage writing that synthesizes and
analyzes course material, especially the primary sources.
- No notes will be
permitted during the exam.
- Each answer will
be expected to make use of a minimum of 4 primary sources from
the term; primary sources are those readings deriving from the
historical period itself (thus, Guibert of Nogent, Bernardo Gui,
Gabriele de'Mussis, etc.). The Jordan textbook and other secondary
source readings may be referenced and employed, but may not count
toward
the primary source minimum. Please cite those sources in your answers
through
paraphrase and direct quotation, and make sure to give your citations
(parenthetical
references are fine).
- Your answers must
incorporate lecture content where appropriate. You may reference
powerpoint
slides and my lectures directly.
- Please bring to
class one or two blank bluebooks (or greenbooks). These may be
purchased in the Smith Center Student Store or at the Bookstore. I will
also have extra copies available should you be unable to acquire one. I
will collect the exam books before the beginning of the exam and
students will receive back in return a like number of books (you give
one, you get one).
- Make sure you have
writing utensils for the exam (pen or pencil is fine).
- You may have
liquids or light snacks (power bar, energy drink) in the exam room, but
please no odiferous meals.
- All completed
questions will receive at least partial credit. Each question will be
weighted 125 points (250 total).
- Hard deductions:
- Missing primary
source(s) (-5 points per source)
- Failure to use
lecture content/material (-10 points)
Accommodations
- If you have
testing accommodations, please contact me in advance of the exam to
