At first, my choice of putting this under ethics and social responsibility may seem odd.
My reasons are actually very personal. I have a very good understanding of pharmacology
and, given my knowledge, I feel that is my social responsibility to speak my mind on
issues involving drugs. Every day people die because of their misuse of drugs. I choose
to take on the task of educating the people I care about because I have seen what
drugs can do to people. I would like to never see that again.
At Least Freud Didn't do Crack
I'll try to not let this get too of topic.
Some people can get away using drugs and still come out
on top. For the vast majority of us, though, drugs are
the road to nowhere (but at least it's the scenic route,
right?)
Freud was one of these people that can handle their
dope. So was Burroughs. So was Timothy Leary.
But let us not forget what heroin did to Kurt Cobain and
Jerry Garcia. I've known enough junkies to safely say
that drugs like heroin and cocaine destroy lives. Hell,
alcohol destroys lives, probably to a much greater
extent than pot. (And that is if you believe pot can
destroy lives. I believe it is possible)
Freud could get away with using cocaine because he used
it in moderation, but to many people cocaine is not an
every-now-and-then stimulant, but a lifestyle.
So, I don't believe it's fair to call Freud a "coke
head." He wasn't using it to excess. It's when the drug
takes over your life that you become a "coke head."
I don't know if there is a drug I'd consider romantic. I
once was at a point where I believed I could gain great
insight from acid, but that turned out to be a load of
crap. I guess it's all relative.
