Robert C. Word, Ph.D.

Research Assistant Professor

Department of Physics

Welcome! I am a research professor working on DOE-funded research in Prof. Rolf Könenkamp’s laboratory.  My present work focuses on two aspects of photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). The first aspect is on instrument development with an emphasis on the use of electrostatic mirrors for correcting electron optical aberrations. Secondly, we use our home-built, high resolution PEEM to image specimens of many kinds, but we are currently interested in visualizing photonic and plasmonic surface fields generated when UV, visible, or IR ultrafast laser light interacts with optical antennas and waveguides.

My interests include development and charaterization of optical electronic devices based on nanotechnology, the electrokinetic properties of lipid and biological membranes, and the use of computational physics to support and direct experiments.
