Title:  Using Alternative Energy as a Vehicle to Improve Science Literacy

Rationale and Background for the Project
Alternative Energy Options are not well  understood by society.
Effectively answers the question “Why do I need to know this?” by connecting learning to real world problems.
Gives students  necessary problem solving and evaluation skills to adapt to a rapidly evolving technological world.

Relationship to Partnership
Solar energy topics related to the research will be investigated.
Students will be given the opportunity for self directed inquiry science similar to research done in laboratories.

Program enhancement
Students will gain valuable technological insights that will allow them to relate science to society.
Designing of projects will allow students to meet Oregon state Standards for CIM and PASS.

Program Impact
Motivate students by generating awareness of the impact of science and technology on the world they live in.
Increase student opportunity to ask and answer meaningful questions using scientific investigation.
Improve overall science literacy for all students.

Implementation
Project implementation will be integrated into the science curriculum at  McKay High School at several levels immediately.
Programs primarily impacted by the project are chemistry and physics.
Minor program changes will also occur in electronics and Introduction to Physical Science.
