2. (2 points each) Describe and illustrate what is meant by the terms below. Select an appropriate reaction to use as an example.

a) anti periplanar

In an E2 elimination reaction, the H+ being removed by the base must be in an anti conformation relative to the halide ion that is leaving.

b) inversion of stereochemistry

In an SN2 substitution reaction, the nucleophile attacks from the side opposite to the leaving group, resulting in opposite (inverted) stereochemistry at the substitution site.
