Chapter 23 Quiz Answers

1. (2 points each) Write the repeat unit of the polymer that would be formed from the following monomers:

a)

b)

c)

2. (2 points) A chain growth polymerization is carried out until it is determined that 90% of the monomers have reacted. Similarly, a step-growth polymerization is carried out until 90% of the monomers have reacted. Describe the difference between the polymers that would be present in these reactions in terms of their degree of polymerization and polydispersity of molecular weight distributions.

CHAIN: about 90% high polymer of comparable degrees of polymerization plus 10% unreacted monomers

STEP: a wide range of oligomers and very little high polymer

3. (2 points) Nylons can have great strength due to H-bonding between polymer strands. Illustrate this by showing two chains of nylon 66 (at least one repeat unit of each).
