Quiz 3

Professor Carl C. Wamser

1. (3 points)  Give complete names for each of the following:

a)

trans-1-sec-butyl -4-isopropylcyclohexane

trans-1-(1-methylethyl)-4-(1-methylpropyl)cyclohexane

b)

1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[3.2.0]heptane

c)

1,2-dichloro-3,4,4-trimethylpentane

2. (4 points)  Write Newman diagrams for all three staggered conformations of
1-chloro-2-methylpropane.   Identify the relative stabilities of the three structures.

The center structure is LEAST stable.

The other two are equal in stability.

3. (3 points)  Write both chair conformations of the compound shown below.  Use the rightmost carbon (with the heavy dot) as C-1.
Can you predict the more stable conformation?  If so, indicate how you can tell.
