As a child growing up I lived in Romania. I was just about
to start school when my parents decided that the best thing for us to do
is to move to America. So we sold all we had and it was just enough
to buy our airline tickets. As a small innocent child I didn’t
know much about the world or what was happening on around me. I was
dependent on my parents for everything. At the age of seven I started
school, unlike the other kids I was a little behind because I started out
late and the foreign language barrier held me back. But I managed
to survive and as a child I remember that the hardest thing for me to do
was to write.
I remember
that I was asked to write, I started out writing the alphabet, then words
and so on, my English vocabulary expanded. The first school I ever
attended was Margaret Scott. That is where my school, and writing
adventure started. Before I started school I did not write.
The only thing on my mind was playing with my friends. But as I got
older I had to leave that behind and move on to school. The only
teacher that I can remember from my younger days is my sixth grade teacher.
I think I remembered her because she was my favorite. She didn’t
ask us to write much but she did read a lot to us. Most of the writing
that I did in my younger days my teachers did not favor over the others.
For me it was more challenging then the other students to write, because
English did not come naturally to me. Therefore it was harder for me compared
to the other students. Most of the time when I wrote papers my teachers
would usually have a lot of corrections.
As I grew I also outgrew the language barrier, it became easier and easier
to express myself in English and to forget my native language. I
liked to do some writing in my spare time but only when I had something
to inspire me. I cannot write just for the sake of writing. There
has to be something behind that to push me, encourage me, and give me strength.
I usually liked to write poems, because there usually is a reason when
I write poems, there is something to give me motivation to write that poem.
Not many friends or family members influence my writing; the things that
usually influence my writing are ideas, occasions, and school. When
I write I like it to be silent so that I can concentrate. I usually
like to write at home because that is where I am most familiar with everything
and I have everything I need.
Depending on the kind of writing I do, I usually like to do an outline
if necessary, or take notes. But if it is something simple and doesn’t
take much research I usually like to write a first draft. When I
am finished with my writing I usually revise it myself then give it to
a friend or teacher that would know more then I would to revise it.
When they revise they usually don’t make major corrections unless they
don’t understand a concept or sentence. The kinds of errors I make
are mostly punctuation or grammar errors.
If I
am really proud of a piece of writing that I have done I usually like to
raise my self-esteem by presenting it to a friend or relative to read.
I have grown in my writing since I started out with the alphabet and words,
and there is still a lot of room for improvement. Each day you learn
something new, and my writing can use a lot of learning.
