Annotated Bibliography

Dennis, B. David.  Beethoven in German Politics 1870-1989. New Haven & London:
Yale UP, 1996.

This book takes a look at Beethoven through the eye of the government and looks at the effects that Beethoven had on the government.  This book links Beethoven to conspiracy theories and many other horrible things.  The reason I think this is helpful in my research is that it might explain why Beethoven was accepted in his time as the bridge between the classical and romantic period.  Since the book is written after Beethoven died I think it will be more analytical.

D’indy, Vincent.  Beethoven.  Freeport, NY: Books For Libraries Press, 1970.

This book is a short biography that was written in the French language and then translated into English.  The reason this will be a helpful resource is because it will show me facts about Beethoven’s life.  I will be able to know how he lived his life in which a chronology does not tell me that information.

Hamburger, Michael.  Beethoven Letters, Journals and Conversations.  Garden City, NY:
Doubleday & Company, Inc. 1960.

This small book written by Michael Hamburger gives exactly what the title says, letters, journals and conversations.  It is a book with a series of things Beethoven wrote to other people and received.  This book will help me know who Beethoven was talking to who his love was and what he was discussing with other people.  It will help me to know why he wrote certain pieces of music and for who it was written.

Montgomery, June., Maurice, Hinson.  Meet the Great Composers.  USA: Alfred
Publishing Co., Inc., n.d.

This short book that discusses many great composers is a great book that gives very little information about many composers.  It gives specific information such as date of birth, period of music and a little about their life.  The reason I like this book is because it gave me the idea of my topic.  I knew I wanted to do music so I was searching this book to find who I wanted to do my research on.  So by searching this book I found that Beethoven supposedly bridged the gap between the classical and romantic period.

Stanley, Glenn.  The Cambridge Companion to Beethoven.  Melbourne, Australia:
Cambridge UP. 2000.

This book gives a small biography and chronology of Beethoven’s life and music.  It also talks specifically about Beethoven as a Romantic hero and as bearer of classical values which fits in right into my topic.  I think this book will help most of the way through my research paper.  It is set up exactly how it would help me best with a biography and a chronology.
