You are to discuss the issue of how each person
constructs knowledge in both scientific / artistic
ways and the conflicts between personal knowledge
and social values.
SETTING: It was an evening in late March, the wind had a sweet touch to its breeze, the sun was setting in the most perfect way you can imagine. The sky was blue, red, orange, and many colors that were pleasing to the eye. Galileo was looking through his window and saw a great picture that was painted by the master above. He saw trees filled with joy, their branches swinging from side to side, like they had a song to sing. The birds were chirping, and everything couldn’t of been more perfect. So Galileo sets out for a walk in the park.
GALILEO: Virginia, I’m going out for a walk in the park.
VIRGINIA: Sure daddy would you like me to accompany you.
GALILEO: No that’s fine I have a good book to keep me company, you stay here and do something in the kitchen.
VIRGINIA: Sure, but don’t stay out to late, it’s getting dark out there pretty soon.
GALILEO: I’ll be fine, you just worry about something else.
So Galileo sets out for a walk in the park with
a great book in his hands.
He is wearing a light summers jacket with
a hat and a pair of casual slacks. When he arrives in the park he
sits down at the nearest bench that he finds and starts to look around
the park to see what else is going on. No soon before he sits down
he is deep in to the book. After a while of reading he seems to hear
something in the background, but doesn’t pay much attention to it considering
that it might be someone just walking by. After reading about twenty
or so pages he gets up and starts to walk off. As soon as he stands
up he sees a young girl of about the age of 17 or 18, looking at him and
painting a portrait.
GALILEO: Who are you and what are you doing?
ARTEMISIA: I am the daughter of Gentileschi, and I was just on my way to paint this beautiful portrait that you see here in the sky.
GALILEO: What portrait, you’ve never seen the sky before?
ARTEMISIA: Yes sir I have seen the sky, but this is not just a sky, it is the most beautiful thing that has ever been created. Every single night the sun sets, in a more beautiful way then I can even capture on this small piece of canvas. Well since you know who I am I don’t seem to know who you are.
GALILEO: I am Galileo Galilei, I am a scientist who has discovered the most amazing discovery that will affect the rest of mankind. I just have to find a way for the public to accept my ideas. It is so hard these days to make people consider your ideas if they are not what they want them to be. I have proof of my discovery, but no matter how hard I try I can never get them to understand. It is like they are blind, and yet I am more blind they are. I mean look at me, I have been studying my whole life, and I know what I am saying is true. I can prove it, but yet they still won’t accept my ideas. It is like what counts as evidence does actually restrict knowledge because of their stubbornness.
Galileo and Artemisia talk for a long time, Galileo goes on explaining to Artemisia his life’s story and how he recanted. Then Artemisia speaks to Galileo like they have known each other for many, many year. It was like they were old friends and now they have met again for the first time in a decade.
ARTEMISIA: That is quite a story, it seems that we are both in the same position. I won’t be allowed to paint because I am a women. Being a women is not what you have to be if you want to be an artist. But this is what I am and with this body I am going to an artist. I know I am good, just like you know you are right with your scientific research. But it seems like society does not want anything that will affect their way of knowing. I have realized through my small years of living that society is stubborn, uneducated, and very unwilling to accept new ideas.
GALILEO: Oh my dear young friend, you have much to learn from your life. You will know that life will never accept new ideas, because they are afraid that new ideas will change the way that life is. Yes new ideas will change the way life is but it will change it for the better. Yet society is like you say, and will not allow anything to come forth unless they agree with it. Artemisia let me take a look and see what you have painted so far.
Galileo goes around Artemisia and looks at the piece of canvas. He is amazed at the sight that he see right before is very eyes. He sees an exact replica of the sight above the canvas. He sees himself, an old man with a great white beard, and glasses so thick that you might thing he was actually blind. He sees himself like he has never seen himself before. In the drawing he sees an expression on his face that seems like he is pondering beautiful things. Galileo seems like this girl so much that he actually wants to give her something.
GALILEO: My dear Artemisia will you please
stay right here, I will be right back, I am going right over there to my
house and I will be right back there is something that I would like to
give you that I think would be the greatest thing that I will ever do.
So Galileo goes into his house as quickly as
an old man can, runs to his globe pulls out his Discorsi and runs back
to the park where Artemisia is waiting with her paintings all wrapped up.
GALILEO: My dear Artemisia I know I have only know you for a short while but it seems to me like you have been my friend for more then decades. You are probably the only person that I can trust this manuscript with. I know you will the right thing with it. You have some great potential in you, and I know you will do great things in this world if only you will not give up. I hope that this helps you along your journey, and my dear Artemisia please never give up.
ARTEMISIA: Oh I don’t think I can take it.
GALILEO: You don’t have to take it, I am giving it to you. My dear I am old and can not do anything else with this manuscript. Please let it help you, but don not let it make you suffer for it’s sake. I am giving it to you, you can decide what to do with it. It will not go anywhere just sitting in my globe, and it will not help anyone. I know that the things I have written in this manuscript are true and I have proven them with facts. Please take it and make it known.
Artemisia was stunned by the compassion and trust
that this man has just given her. She does not know what to do.
But she takes the manuscript and reads it over and over. Later she
receives a letter from Virginia, letting her know that Galileo has passed
away. Artemisia thinks a lot about the day that she met Galileo.
She actually would put it at the top of her accomplishments. That
day really meant a lot to her, she never had anyone in her whole life put
as much trust in her as did the stranger that she met on that beautiful
night. Artemisia and Galileo connected on such a level that you never
would of thought an old man and a young charming girl could ever connect.
That night Artemisia saw a small light shining in her future. She
saw that this world might actually change, and accept new ideas.
She knew that her and the stranger she met would be a starting point for
the future. And she was glad she met him that night.
