Is Mary Shelley constructing or deconstructing
knowledge
in the creation of the character Dr.
Frankenstein?
When Mary Shelley was writing this book it was for the purpose of a contest.
She did not know or was even thinking that this short story was even going
to become a book. She started out writing for the reason of a contest
that was established between some of her colleagues that she used to read
books with. It was a small group that sat around and read scary stories
to each other. One day they got interested in making up a scary story.
The deal was that every one wrote their story and when they were done they
would each read them and the greatest story would win.
After they all started writing their stories they all did not keep up the
deal except Mary Shelley. When you read this book you can see bits
and pieces of her husbands work, because he proof read the bok and made
a few changes of his own. Her husband was also a writer or more of
a poet. But when she started to get recognized for her writings and
people saw that they were good, he began to encourage her and he read her
stuff and made changes. Her work was published and is a great book
today.
When Mary Shelley was creating this book I am not sure that she was actually
trying to construct or deconstruct knowledge, but over the years it might
seem like that. I think that through her book she is creating knowledge,
because with every thought that is out there, there is one more thing to
read and learn about. When I read this book it really challenged
my mind. I never read a book where someone actually creates a monster.
Of course this is a fictional book, but it was really interesting to me.
Know since I have read this book I have one more thing or thought in my
head. Which means I am more educated. So I think that through
her book she kind of constructs knowledge in a sort of way. This
book is fictional as I have already said, but I think it constructs knowledge.
