Within second language acquisition (SLA), my research can be positioned under the umbrellas of 1) computer-assisted language learning (CALL), 2) language learning in interaction, and 3) L2 pragmatics. CALL and learning in interaction intersect in my research agenda because of the bigger question I am investigating: Under what circumstances can individuals learn and practice their second language best with particular technologies, and when do learners benefit the most from interacting with other speakers? My main focus is the learning of L2 pragmatics in various environments, though I have also examined incidental vocabulary and grammar learning. A theme that cuts across my work is the investigation of cognitive processes underlying SLA. Some of my work also involves language assessment.
