Honesty Policy

Let's keep this simple and clear:

Copying Homework:First incident: Warning, Second Incident: Failure.
Cheating on Exam:Failure and possible expulsion from the University.

Homework Policy

I will not usually grade all the problems from each assignment. I'll choose some roughly at random (no, I'm not going to tell you ahead of time which ones). I assign relatively few problems so you can bet I expect you to do them all. If homework is late, but you told me ahead of time then (assuming it's not a common occurrence) I will usually give full credit. If you don't tell me ahead of time then it goes on the "late pile" and I make no promises as to what happens after that. While it's better to turn in homework late than never, don't expect late homework to be graded.

Homework Rules

  1. Write up your homework as if creating a report for your boss. This means that you must first state the assigned problem. Five points off for each unstated problem.
  2. Draw and label any relevant picture or graph. Sometimes half the battle is getting a clear picture of the problem at hand.
  3. No Decimal Expressions! All answers and work must be done using whole numbers or fractions at all times unless specifically directed otherwise. Sometimes the difference between 2/3 and 4/6 is critical to finding a solution. Sometimes it's the fact that two fractions cancel out that matters.
    Fractions Illuminate, Decimals Obscure
  4. Show all relevant steps. Nothings says: "I know what I'm doing" quite like judiciously including all the relevant steps in solving a problem.
  5. Staple your pages. Five points off for unstapled work.
  6. No tattered edges. Five points off if pages are simply ripped out of a spiral notebook, for example.

Make-up Policy

For make-up exams, as with late homework, prior arrangement is preferred. Life does happen to us all so the best policy is to come and talk with me and we'll figure out what to do.

Attendance Policy

This is not a tele-course and attendance is assumed. It's up to you, but be aware that students in the past that have simply studied on their own have been rudely surprised by the exams. Don't let this unpleasantness be your story.

Cell Phones, Pages, PDA's and Other Nuisances

It is in your interest that you and your fellow students create an environment free from unnecessary distraction. Please take your urgent and most fascinating conversation outside.

Special Needs

If you have a special need requiring academic accommodations, please notify me to make appropriate arrangements. Be sure you are registered with the DRC (Disability Resource Center (503) 725-4240) so that you can take advantage of the available assistance.
