  Why study zooplankton?  The answer is that they are fascinating animals...they have a diversity of    

  reproductive strategies, are adaptable to many extreme conditions (i.e., desiccation, cold, etc.), can rapidly

  evolve defenses in response to factors like predation and toxicity, are ubiquitous in aquatic habitats in  

  vast numbers, and can be easily experimentally manipulated.  In short, they're an ideal study organism.
