Textbook: Great Essays

Materials:  Two "blue books" for journal writing.  These can be purchased at the PSU bookstore.

Class Objectives:

  1. Write a well developed and clearly organized cause/effect and argumentative essay of at least two pages
  2. Write effective introductions and conclusions for essays
  3. Use transitions and coordinating and subordinating words to produce cohesive and coherent essays
  4. Demonstrate an ability to accurately use the rules of punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and formatting expected in academic writing
  5. Use level 3 grammar structures in your writing
  6. Use correction suggestions from peers and instructor to revise essays
  7. Cooperate with your classmates and instructor in generating ideas for writing and editing in peer groups and in conferences
Assignments:
Homework/Attendance/Participation    20%
You will complete textbook exercises and writing activities for homework that will help prepare you for the writing assignments.
Two revised essays     30%
You will write one cause/effect essay and one argumentative essay (2 pages each).  You will write several drafts for each assigned essay.  It is important to incorporate my feedback and feedback from other students through critiques and conferences into your revisions.
Free writing journal     10%
You will have weekly journal writing assignments using writing styles we need to review such as: narrative, descriptive, process, classification, compare/contrast (use the blue books).
Two in class essays    20%
You will need to write two well organized in-class essays on assigned topics in 60 minutes using grammar structures appropriate for level 3.
Final exam (in-class essay)     20%

Attendance: Attendance is part of your grade.  If you must miss a class, please call or e-mail me before the class. Also remember that you are responsible for any information you miss if you are absent. If you miss an in-class writing, you cannot make it up, so please make sure to be in class on those days.  Some homework assignments cannot be made up.  Other late homework assignments will receive only partial credit.  Late writing assignments will be lowered one letter grade per day.

Participation: Active participation in all class activities is required. If you participate actively, you will learn more in this class. Please try your best!

Other:  No student can pass this course without getting 70% or better on both organization and grammatical issues appropriate to level 3, on in-class writing assignments.

Week 1: W 10/2, F 10/4
Diagnostic test.  Friday - Welcome Meeting at 11:30 in 294-8 Smith Center
Week 2: M 10/7, W 10/9, F 10/11
Go over syllabus and calendar.  Icebreaker.  Introduction to course and texts.  Review essay format.  Study sample essays.
Week 3: M 10/14, W 10/16, F 10/18
Study sample essays.  Focus on writing hooks, thesis statements, topic sentences, supporting sentences, and conclusions.  Writing as a process.  Outlining. 
Week 4: M 10/21, W 10/23, F 10/25
Types of sentences.  Using transitions for cohesion, coherence, and unity.  Introduce Cause/Effect pattern.  Cause/Effect structure words.
Week 5: M 10/28, W 10/30, F 11/1
Cause/Effect continued.  Achieving coherence using key nouns.  Final draft of Cause/Effect essay due.
Week 6 M 11/4, W 11/6, F 11/8
In-class writing: Cause/Effect.  Introduce Argumentative writing.
Week 7: M 11/11, W 11/13, F 11/15
Monday - Veterans Day Holiday.  Argumentative writing continued.  Concrete support - fact vs. opinion - using examples as support. 
Week 8: M 11/18, W 11/20, F 11/22
Argumentative writing continued.  Controlling tone with modals.  Faulty logic. 
Week 9: M 11/25, W 11/27, F 11/29
Final draft of Argumentative essays due.  Friday - Thanksgiving Holiday
Week 10: M 12/2, W 12/4, F 12/6
In class writing: Argument.  End of term reflection.
Week 11: Final Exams - Time and location to be announced
