Textbook :Introduction to Academic Writing, by Oshima and Hogue
Materials:  Notebook 8.5 x 11" and a pocket folder

Class Objectives:
The main focus of this class is on developing the paragraph.  By the end of this class, you should be able to:

Class Requirements:
  1. Paragraphs and essays - You will have weekly writing assignments.  Assignments will include writing paragraphs and essays both in class and outside of class.
  2. Writing activities & Homework - You will complete textbook exercises and writing activities that will help prepare you for the writing assignments.
  3. Word processing - You will work on improving your typing and word processing skills in the computer lab.  You are expected to type your writing assignments on the computer by the end of the term.
  4. Portfolio - You are expected to keep all of your assignments in a portfolio folder for evaluation.


Attendance: Attendance is part of your grade. If you miss 3 or more classes, it will lower your grade. If you must miss a class, please call or e-mail me before the class. Also remember that you are responsible for any information you miss if you are absent. If you miss a quiz or a test, you cannot make it up, so please make sure to be in class on those days.  I do not accept late homework.  Late writing assignments will be lowered one letter grade per day.

Participation: Active participation in all class activities is required. If you participate actively, you will learn more in this class. Please try your best!

Grading: Your final grade will be based on your writing assignments (portfolio), homework, tests, quizzes, attendance and participation.  No student can pass this course without getting 70% on both organization and grammatical issues appropriate to level 2, on an in-class writing assignment.

Writing basics:  Format, mechanics and spelling, sentences, paragraphs. 
Grammar: first person, third person singular.

Narration:  Chronology, time words.
Grammar: first and third person plural.
Wed:  Meet in Computer lab NH 448 for an introduction to word processing
