Materials: One audio cassette
tape and one regular VHS video cassette tape
Class Objectives: Our goals
in this class are to practice speaking and listening skills in English,
to give everyone a chance to speak and to be heard, and to learn about
some interesting issues of importance to people in the United States.
As a member of this class, you are expected to talk about the topics being
discussed and to listen carefully and with respect to what others say in
group discussions, lectures, and individual presentations.
In the speaking part of this class
you will:

Prepare and present an 8-10 minute individual
presentation by:
-
Selecting and limiting a topic
-
Interviewing and gathering information
from native speakers
-
Including a clear introduction, statement
of topic, and supporting points
-
Participate in small group discussions
within the class by:
-
Initiating and/or leading the discussion
-
Agreeing/disagreeing with others' ideas
-
Clarifying and requesting clarification
-
Paraphrasing others' ideas
-
Summarizing and/or providing a conclusion
-
Present an understandable dictation
of 2-3 sentences defining a term or concept in your major field of study.
In the listening part of this
class you will:

Develop a system of note-taking skills
using taped or live lectures by:
-
Listening for cues to topic shift, summary,
recapitulation, and conclusion

Expanding use of symbols and abbreviations
-
Visually ordering lecture notes
-
Utilizing lecture notes for information
retrieval tasks

Comprehending academic vocabulary within
a lecture
-
Demonstrate active listening skills
in small group discussion by:

identifying non-verbal cues

Paraphrasing others' ideas

Summarizing others' ideas

Clarifying points made by others
-
Identify themes and sub-themes in radio
and TV news stories by:

Summarizing main ideas of stories

Differentiating between important and
less significant details
Expectations and Workload:
I expect you to come to class ready and willing to participate in class
discussions and listening activities. You will have homework due
every class period and you will have some in-class assignments that count
as a homework. You are responsible for any information you miss if
you are absent. Some homework assignments cannot be made up. Other
late assignments will receive only partial credit.
Other: Occasionally,
I may assign pronunciation exercises in the ESL Learning Center.
If you need extra practice with pronunciation take advantage of the resources
available in the Learning Center on your own time. Hours for the
spring term are:

Saturday 12:00 - 5:00
Attendance: Attendance is an
important part of your grade in listening/speaking class. If you must miss
a class, please call or e-mail me before the class. Also remember that
you are responsible for any information you miss if you are absent. If
you miss a quiz, test, or your presentation you cannot make it up, so please
make sure to be in class on those days.
Participation: Active participation
in all class activities is required. If you participate actively, you will
learn more in this class. Please try your best!
Grading: Your final grade
will be based on three categories:

Listening 40 % - This includes
note-taking on live and videotaped in-class lectures, vidoes and films
on American culture and current issues in the United States, and quizzes
on the content of lecture notes and videos

Speaking 40% - This includes
participation in group discussions, self-evaluations on group discussions,
speeches, and general class participation
-
Final Exam 20% - This includes
a final discussion and lecture quiz
Students must earn a score of 70%
or higher in each of the three categories to pass to Level 5 Listening
Speaking.
