Textbook and Novel:

Class Objectives:
The main goal of this class is to improve your ability to read and understand both academic texts and works of fiction in English. By the end of this class, you should be able to: Expectations and Workload: You will have reading assignments due for almost every class and you will be asked to do a group presentation on one or two of them. Please be sure to read all assigned texts before we discuss them in class. I expect you to come to class ready and willing to participate in a discussion about the text. If you have questions about anything in the text that you cannot guess or infer from the context, please come to class prepared to ask your classmates or me about it. You are responsible for any information you miss if you are absent. I do not accept late homework.

Attendance: Attendance is part of your grade. If you miss 3 or more classes, it will lower your grade. If you must miss a class, please call or e-mail me before the class. Also remember that you are responsible for any information you miss if you are absent. If you miss a quiz or a test, you cannot make it up, so please make sure to be in class on those days.

Participation: Active participation in all class activities is required. If you participate actively, you will learn more in this class. Please try your best!

Grading: Your final grade will be based on your class participation including homework, novel reading assignments, group presentations, quizzes, midterm, and final exam. Scores must be above 70% in all three areas in order to pass to level 4 reading.
