Class Objectives:
The main goal of this class is to improve your speaking and listening skills for academic study and everyday conversation.  We will focus on listening practice, communication skills, pronunciation practice, learning strategies, and cross-cultural communication.

In the speaking part of this class you will:

In the listening part of this class you will: Expectations and Workload:  I expect you to come to class ready and willing to participate in class discussions and listening activities.  You will have homework due every class period.  Typical homework will be interviewing people, using the telephone to retrieve information, and listening to news stories etc.  You are responsible for any information you miss if you are absent. I do not accept late homework.

Attendance: Attendance is part of your grade. If you miss 3 or more classes, it will lower your grade. If you must miss a class, please call or e-mail me before the class. Also remember that you are responsible for any information you miss if you are absent. If you miss a quiz, test, or your presentation you cannot make it up, so please make sure to be in class on those days.

Participation: Active participation in all class activities is required. If you participate actively, you will learn more in this class. Please try your best!

Grading: Your final grade will be based on your class participation (both listening and speaking) including homework, presentations, midterm listening exams, and final exam. Scores must be above 70% in all areas in order to pass to level 4 listening / speaking.

Tentative Class Calendar
Week 1 T 9/25, Th 9/27
Tues:  Diagnostic testing.  Go over the syllabus.  Icebreaker -- getting to know your classmates.
Thurs:  Student introductions to the class.  Start Unit 4 - Nonverbal Messages - Chapter 7 Body Language p. 86.  HW:  Reading and thinking about the topic. 
Week 2 T 10/2, Th 10/4
Tues:  Unit 4 - Nonverbal Messages - Chapter 7 Body Language.  American Voices: before the interviews, listening to interviews, after the interviews. HW:  Do some field research on body language.
Thurs:  Present your field research in small groups.  Focus on asking for clarification.  Academic listening and note taking -- Body language across cultures p. 94.  HW:  Conduct a survey.  Details to be announced in class. 
Week 3 T 10/9, Th 10/11
Tues:  Discuss survey results in small groups.  Start Unit 4 - Nonverbal Messages - Chapter 8 The Language of Touch, Space, and Artifacts p. 99. HW:  Cross-cultural communication worksheet.  Explaining proverbs.
Thurs: Discuss proverb homework in groups.   Listening to interviews continued. HW:  Think of a proverb from your country.  Prepare a 2-4 minute presentation covering the meaning of your proverb, when it is used/who uses it, and explain why you believe this proverb is true. 
Week 4 T 10/16, Th 10/18
Tues:  Students take turns presenting their proverbs to the class.  (individual mini- presentation #1).  Academic listening and note taking (chapter 8) -- Nonverbal communication - the hidden dimension of communication. HW: Take home listening activity.
Thurs: Midterm listening Exam 1.  Introduce impromptu speech requirements.  Students generate a list of impromptu speech ideas. 
Week 5 T 10/23, Th 10/25
Tues: Impromptu speeches (1 -2 minutes) (important**bring tape cassette) Small group discussions: controversial issues. HW:  Transcribe one minute of your tape on a piece of paper.  Give your transcript and tape to Leslie on Thursday.
Thurs:  Small group discussions: controversial issues 
Week 6 T 10/30, Th 11/1
Tues:  Small group discussions continued    HW: Review tape transcription corrections
Thurs:  Chapter 5 - Assessing intelligence
Week 7 T 11/6, Th 11/8
Tues:  Unit 3 - Chapter 5 - Assessing intelligence
Thurs:  Start Unit 3 - Chapter 6 Accounting for Variations in Intelligence p. 72. 
Week 8 T 11/13, Th 11/15
Tues:  Midterm listening Exam 2.  Introduce individual presentation guidelines (5-7 minutes required). 
Thurs: Chapter 6 - Accounting for Variations in Intelligence.
Week 9 T 11/20, Th 11/22
Tues: Finalize the content and organization of individual presentations.  Unit 5 - Interpersonal Relationships - Chapter 9 Friendship
Thurs:  Thanksgiving Holiday No Classes
Week 10 T 11/27, Th 11/29
Tues:  Individual presentations (some students will be absent because of the TOEFL Exam)
Thurs:   Individual presentations
