Textbook: Grammar Links - A Theme Based Course for Reference and Practice

Materials: Blue Books (you can buy these at the PSU bookstore)

Class Objectives: The main goal of this class is to improve your understanding and control of complex grammar structures in writing, speaking and reading.  It is expected that you are entering level four with a strong understanding and control of all the verb tenses.  By the end of the class you should be able to identify and understand the following grammatical structures in reading and use them in writing and speaking with at least 70% accuracy:

Homework: You will have an assignment for almost every class period.  Some of the assignments will be handed in to me, and others will be completed in you book.  Please complete all assignments on time in order to participate fully in class.  We will be covering a lot of material and the class will be moving quickly.  Assignments will include: grammar exercises, writing tasks, speaking tasks, and investigating grammar in authentic sources.  Late homework will receive only partial credit.

Attendance: Attendance is part of your grade. If you miss 3 or more classes, it will lower your grade. If you must miss a class, please call or e-mail me before the class.  Also remember that you are responsible for any information you miss if you are absent.  Please get the numbers of several classmates so you can call them and find out what you missed.  If you miss a quiz or a test, you cannot make it up, so please make sure to be in class on those days.

Participation: Active participation in all class activities is part of your grade. If you participate actively, you will learn more in this class.  I expect you to let me know if you need help.  I am available during my office hours or by appointment.  Please come see me and please try your best in our class!

Other:  Occationally, I may assign exercises in the ESL Learning Center.  If you need extra practice with grammar, especially verb tenses, take advantage of the resources available in the Learning Center.  Hours for the spring term are:

Grading: Your final grade will be based on your class participation, attendance, homework and other assignments, unit quizzes and tests.  In order to pass this course, you must achieve an average of at least 70% in each of the above areas.
