Course Description:  Nowadays, every college student needs to know how to use computers for class presentations, for writing papers, and for preparing reports.  In this class, you will learn some of the computer and internet tools which students use for university classes.  You will create a final project which demonstrates that you can use these tools effectively.

Materials:

  • ODIN Account
  • One 100 megabyte, IBM compatible Zip disk (around $10.00 at the PSU Bookstore)
  • An email address
  • Uses:  Some of the ways the internet and computers are used in American colleges and universities are as follows.  We will try to touch upon many of these ways in this class. Pace:  In this class we will start with basic skills such as, using email, word processing and typing skills (using a program such as Word), and gathering information from the World Wide Web.  We will then move on to other elements depending on your needs and class time.  Finally, each student will create and present a report using basic elements of Microsoft Power Point presentation software OR students will create and present their personal homepage as a final class project.

Grades: You will receive a letter grade (A-F) in this class.  If you come to class, participate in activities, and complete all the assigned work, you will do very well!  Since our class meets only once a week, more than two absences will lower your grade by 10%.  The following breakdown will be used to evaluate your performance.

    Grading Breakdown
    90% - 100% = A
    80% - 89% = B
    70% - 79% = C
    60% - 69% = D
    50% - 59% = F
Other: There are many computer related resources available in the Learning Center. I urge you to take advantage of the resources available in both the Learning Center and on the World Wide Web for your independent computer study.  Hours for the Learning Center this term are:

Learning Center Hours (EH 219) - Fall 2002
                        Monday, Wednesday, Friday 12:00 - 6:00
                        Tuesday, Thursday 9:00 - 6:00
                        Saturday 12:00 - 4:00

Lastly, I hope you will enjoy this class and increase your knowledge of how computers are used in university settings.  If you have any questions, please feel free to write or call me at the address and phone at the top of this page. Have fun!
