Box 41:

 

1941-1975: Sources: Hillsboro Angus, The Oregon Journal, Tigard Times, News-Times, Oregonian.  The first section was about the production of sewing and knitting.  They were shipping Kits to boys in the service, garments for Great Britain and other things.  Next it talked about the sewing rooms being opened in firemen’s workrooms; the time was during the war.  It talked about the problems about supplies.  There is an article about how they received certificates for their hard work, and then the book continues to 1971 where they help in the disaster relief.  Another item is here was a service that was provided called voices from home where people sent their voices over to the men in the war.  There were descriptions of a bloodmobile and of blood donors.

 

1967-1980: International Services Sources: Mostly all pictures very few official documents.  This scrapbook has items pertaining to the trouble dealing with people not speaking English, a program is started to help learn to speak other languages, and to learn how to deal with international people.  It also talks about how a Japanese doctor send 300,000 yen to America for relief fund in St Helens disaster.    

 

Box 42:

 

1937-1941:  This scrapbook is marked with a stamp from the Janet Chapman Memorial Library, Oregon Trail Chapter American Red Cross.  Many of the news clippings come from unknown newspapers and contain no dates.  Other clippings come from the Oswego Review, Clackamas County News, Molalla Pioneer, Oregon City Enterprise, Banner-Courier, Milwaukie Review, News Advertiser, Clippings detail: Hygiene awards, and hygiene classes, first aid schools, the organization of auxiliary organizations such as the Junior Red Cross, aid for China, appointments within the organization, fundraising drives, establishing emergency stations, benefits, European War Relief Fund activities, highlights the network of fraternal organizations, “Citizenship Training for Internal Defense” strategy, and the creation of “Defense units.’  Of note is the absence of blood drives. 

 

1965-1968: Sources: The Oregonian, News Register, Carlton-Yamhill Review, Yamhill County Review, Capital Journal, [A couple of documents 2 on the monthly report of the Yamhill District events pertaining to the Red Cross, 2 more on a memo for blood needed for Vietnam]. There are clippings talking about the bloodmobile, and blood banks. More clippings are on the first aid course that is being offered on the television. There are some clippings about the record setting blood donation in 1966. Also some on the events the Red Cross helped put on. There are some clippings about disaster relief. Also found are some clippings on the Red Cross campaigns, swimming lessons. Also, there are articles about the goods being sent over to Vietnam for orphans, and other cargo. Lastly, there are some clippings about blood needed for heart surgery.

1957:  Sources:  Carlton-Yamhill Review, News Register, Sheridan Sun, Williamina Times, Dayton Tribune.  Clippings relate to fundraising quotas, necessity of blood drive, naming of campaign head, 12 teams ready for residential fundraising drive, cartoon connecting the donations to the RC to the Ten Commandments, disaster relief services provided by RC, services provided to servicemen, and the lagging of the fundraising drive.   

 

 

1958:  Sources:  Daily News Register, Newberg Graphic, Sheridan Sun, and Oregon Journal.  Clippings related to the blood donations and blood drive that starts in March.  Al Beeler was named to talk about the drive.  Other clippings talked about the volunteers who helped with the teaching of first aid to over 500 people, the swimming water safety program, and loss of blood bank was talked about as well.

1959-1965: Sources: The Oregon Journal, Oregonian, A couple of Pictures. There are newspaper clippings about home nursing videos that are offered on the television. There are articles about the Red Cross in a century of serving internationally and also 50 years in the Portland chapter. More articles include retiring GEN.A.M.GRUEHTHER. Also there are articles on Red Cross aid to disaster relief. There is an article on the invention of ingenuity by Red Cross members. Lastly, there are articles involving vital blood donations.

 

1946-1953: Sources: Red Cross Pamphlet, Oregon Journal, The Oregonian, The Gresham, Park Rose Enterprise, Sellwood Morland Bee, Los Angeles Times, Sunday Journal, Valley Advertiser, Toronto Daily Star, First Church Spire, Vanport Tribune, Red Cross Home Nursing Programs, Letter from Doctors, Red Cross Papers.  This scrapbook has clippings of magazine and newspaper about home nursing classes, It details men and women learning how to deal with injuries.  The training involves child’s health, and adult health.  There are articles that involve mock atomic bomb drops and how to deal with various injures.  There also are articles involving the consolidation into two branches of the Red Cross in Oregon.  More of the articles talk about the administrator of the Polio vaccine.  A long time worker retires; some people thank Red Cross for the training they received.  Articles on how they received x-ray machines.  There are articles on Civil defense, how to feed infants/Teachers were teaching first aid then stopped. 

 

Yamhill County American Red Cross 1964:  This scrapbook contains only newspaper clippings from 1963-1964.  The clippings are from the Sheridan Sun, The News Register, Newberg Graphic, The Portland Journal, and the Oregon Journal.  The clippings reflect the activities of the Red Cross including blood drives, conducting “social history surveys” for the VA hospital for individuals in the community receiving Veterans Administration benefits, fund drives, water safety classes, lists of “One-gallon club” donors.

Times, Oregonian, Oregon Journal, Ladies Home Journal, Parkrose-East County Enterprise, East Broadway News, Toronto Daily Star, Walnut Park News, The Cardinal, Sellwood-Morland Bee, The Washingtonian, The American Weekly, Colliers, McCall’s.  This scrap book goes from 1954-1962; this book is rich with information pertaining to the Nursing services.  Many articles deal with the home nursing program.  Next there are articles regarding about the classes that are being set up to help people with awareness and preparation about injuries (First Aid).  Next they have some news clippings about 1959 they’re 50th anniversary.  They also have a couple articles about the dad’s raising kids with the guidelines of the Red Cross. 

 

Red Scrapbook 1968-1978:  Initially a scrapbook composed by the McMinnville Red Cross office.  A note on the inside cover indicates that the materials collected represent only a small portion of the publicity the agency received.  All of the materials contained in the scrapbook are newspaper clippings with the exception of a photo and a couple of blood-drive announcements.  The clippings are from the Carlton-Yamhill Review and The News Register (McMinnville), The date range of the initial clippings are from 2/68- to 7/75.  There are a few random clippings from 1977 and 1978.  The scope of the scrapbook encompasses all activities the McMinnville Red Cross engaged in:  Blood drives, lifeguard training, volunteer projects etc.  The book also contains death notices and other news items pertaining to long time volunteers.

1939-1947: This is a photo album of the Red Cross during the war most of the pictures are about the training of first aid to nurses, one of the pictures is from the Army Air base in Portland, Oregon. One picture is a Fireman learning home nursing; they are also teaching everyday people how to use first aid. Some photos of African Americans and Filipino people getting first aid lesions. Males were also taking baby training classes.
