Student Run Services

Students organize and run a number of services at Portland State. Student-run services are different than student organizations in that they are running with a business-like model, are required to keep high industry standards, and may be handling revenue. SALP supports student-run services by acting much like a general manager including accounting, risk-management, and providing professional and leadership development for the students involved.

Student-Run Services at Portland State include:

  • Food For Thought Café
  • Smith Memorial Student Union, 1825 SW Broadway, basement Student-run cafe up that embodies sustainability principles. Tasty, inexpensive, local grown food and drink!

  • Fifth Avenue Cinema
  • 510 SW Hall Portland, Oregon 97201
5th Avenue Cinema; the only operating college cinema in Oregon and a very beloved part of the PSU community. 5th Avenue Cinema hosts weekly screenings of historically and/or artistically significant films; fosters community for students interested in film; supports student filmmakers and show their work at the cinema; provides a free venue for student groups and non-profits that wish to show a film; collaborates with other local film organizations; and provides a valuable educational experience for the students that staff the cinema.

  • Littman and White Galleries
  • Smith Memorial Student Union, 1825 SW Broadway, 2nd floor
Smith Memorial Student Union, 1825 SW Broadway, 2nd floor Student-run art galleries on the 2nd floor of Smith Memorial Student Union. The Art Exhibition Committee's primary goal is to enrich the cultural experience of PSU students and the surrounding communities through the exhibition of art. The broader goal entails hosting receptions which serve to help narrow the gap between artist and viewer. Our plan is to cultivate artistic exposure and bring in artists and artwork that will better enhance the cultural appreciation at PSU. Contact by e-mailing artcomATpdx.edu or calling 503-725-5656.

  • Portland State Professional Sound
  • PSPS provides sound support to student organizations and other departments and groups. They also host a bi-weekly concert series on campus every Wednesday and Friday at 12pm (Tuesday and Thursday during Summer term). These shows take place either in the park blocks on the main stage or in the cafeteria in the Smith Center during rainy weather. As always, these shows are free to the public. They book music performers year-round (except in between terms) and always book one term in advance.

  • Queer Resource Center
