Forming Organizations

An Advisor may designate a student organization as a "Forming Organization" if they missed required deadlines or need extra time to address questions or concerns brought up during the recognition process. In order to be "Forming" the student organization has to at minimum fill out a application, three student leaders meet with the assigned Advisor, and meet the criteria of a student organization as outlined above. If the advisor recognizes the organization as Forming, they will have the following rights and responsibilities:

Rights and privileges of a Forming Student Organization

  • Access to an assigned Advisor for resources and support;
  • Access to trainings, workshops, and conferences for student leaders;
  • Ability to reserve and use SALP or CREC controlled space;
  • Ability to table at recruitment fairs hosted by SALP and CREC

Responsibilities of a Forming Student Organization

  • Maintain at least three members of the group that are taking 6 undergraduate or 5 graduate credits and are responsible for the leadership of the organization;
  • Maintain at least five active members of the organization;
  • Be open to new membership and /or involvement;
  • Have a clearly advertised way for interested students to contact the group and respond to requests for information in a timely manner;
  • Maintain communication with the assigned Advisor;
  • Demonstrate compliance with Portland State's prohibition of discrimination on the basis of rac, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, maritial status, disability, disabled veteran and Vietnam-era veteran status except for those gender qualifications directly relevant to the organizational purpose;
  • Be student led and organized;
  • Maintain total membership of at least 80% currently enrolled Portland State University Students

Student Group Affiliation

A group who is a student-chapter of a larger regional or national organization may apply to be affiliated wit Portland State University. Affiliation is a way to formalize a relationship between a student-run chapter of a larger organization and Portland State University while recognizing the role of the larger organization in determining how the group functions, the mission, and purpose. Affiliated student chapters have fewer rights and responsibilities as a recognized student organization and may have a faculty, alumni, or community advisor with a more directive and engaged role. Affiliated student chapters are not funded through state dollars.

 

Criteria for Affiliation:

  1. Group must be a student chapter of a larger organization, for example a Greek or Honorary chapter.
  2. There must be Portland State student involvement in the leadership and membership of the group.
  3. The group must be in good standing with the University, meaning there are no ongoing risk, liability, or conduct concerns
  4. They must have an alumni or faculty partner willing to support the on-campus chapter and to liaison with the SALP office when necessary.
  5. They do not access state dollars through Portland State University.

Process for becoming affiliated:

Must apply once a year and have a student leader(and faculty or alumni advisor)meet with the SALP advisor.

 

Rights and Privileges

  • Access to an assigned Advisor for resources and support;
  • Access to trainings, workshops, and conferences for student leaders;
  • Establishment of a Portland State agency account and accounting services;
  • Use of Portland State University in name of student chapter;
  • Ability to table at recruitment fairs hosted by SALP and CREC.
