Elections

The following guidelines apply for election by student membership organizations, unless the organization constitution provides an alternative approved by a SALP Advisor.  The guidelines were approved by the SALP Advisory Board 5-29-08.

Minimum Eligibility for Candidates

Per the Student Organization Application and Recognition policy, an eligible candidate is a Portland State student taking six undergraduate credits and maintain a 2.0 GPA per term or taking five graduate credits and maintaining a 3.0 GPA per term. Eligible student leaders must be in good standing with Portland State (2.0 cumulative PSU GPA for undergraduates and a 3.0 cumulative PSU GPA for graduates). A person who is staff or faculty at Portland State, not including student staff, as defined by Human Resources, is not eligible to be a student leader.

Voting Rights

Portland State University students who are currently enrolled for at least one credit hour and who are voting members of an organization may vote in student office elections.  Each organization may determine its own criteria for voting membership.  These membership criteria must be outlined in the constitution or charter document, and should follow all non-discrimination policies.

Election Procedures

Students intending to run for office must submit their names and student ID numbers to their SALP Advisor who will verify their eligibility to run for office.  Upon verification of eligibility, candidates may announce their intention to run for office.

The organization's current elected officers will provide their SALP Advisor with a list of eligible voters, as defined in the approved organization constitution. If no membership criteria are outlined, then all students taking at least one credit hour at the time of elections may vote once.

The student organization must give SALP a voting time frame that is a minimum of two full business days.

In order to vote, students must present their valid PSU I.D. to the SALP office.  The student will place his or her student ID number and signature on the appropriate voter list.  The student will then receive a ballot to be completed and deposited in the SALP office.

On the first working day after elections, ballots will be counted by a SALP staff member.  The student organization may choose to have a SALP Advisor and interested candidates present.

If the elected position is a paid position, all minimum hiring requirements must be met.
