~ Students For Unity(SFU) Coordinator Position

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Make sure SFU meetings are well publicized and listed in the SFU listserve.
  • Help organize SFU interns, and keep a running list of tasks that volunteers can be easily plugged into, as well as of descriptions and updates of current campaigns. The Coordinator is responsible for working with volunteers and new members to discover where their interests and time commitments fit into SFU’s overall mission, and what campaigns they might want to work on.
  • Build connections with other PSU student groups, community organizations in Portland, and regional and national organizations. The CC acts as the main liaison with the Oregon Student Action Network, PCASC, Portland Jobs with Justice, Cascade Rising Tide, and other affiliations, and helps to connect PSU students to these organizations.
  • Maintain and update SFU membership and contacts databases and e-mail listservs.
  • Approve any expenditure requests to ensure they fit into the budget, and purchase and maintain an inventory of office supplies and equipment. Works with Bookkeeper in keeping Bookkeeper updated of all expenditure requests approved.
  • Assist in the development of campaigns, and help ensure that campaigns incorporate a critical analysis of systemic oppression: white supremacy, capitalism, patriarchy, and heterosexism, anthropomorphism, etc. Work with the group to develop guidelines for choosing issues and campaigns that fit into SFU’s mission statement.
  • Attend fall Student Development retreat, and work with the Events Coordinator to organize a Spring Retreat for SFU members where group Constitution, mission-statement, position descriptions, vision, and goals are examined and revised as necessary. Help ensure that this information and other group processes are visible and communicated to members and the community, and incorporated into everything SFU does.
  • Act as a representative of Students for Unity to PSU and the community.
  • Keep in good communication with SFU's affiliating groups.
  • Attend one leadership/organizing training per quarter.

Educational Value:
The educational value for this position is a .75 level. The position provides learning and experience in grassroots organizing and campus outreach. It will develop skills in working with and training volunteers, and developing a program for gradually introducing students to levels of involvement with SFU. It will develop skills in budgeting, fundraising, and grant-writing, facilitating meetings, consensus process, training others, and maintaining an organization. It will also provide knowledge of university processes (working with administrators, Student Development, etc.), running effective campaigns, student organizing on a regional and national level, coalition-building, and anti-oppression analysis.

    Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist Communications Coordinator in ensuring that new contacts are called, e-mailed, invited to the listserv and to meetings, and entered into the database.
  • Attend campus and community group meetings as often as possible, and get updates on volunteer needs. Help galvanize SFU membership for solidarity actions in the community, as well as for on-campus events where our allies need support.
  • Bottom-line regular SFU tabling and info-session (at least one per month) and keeping tabling box organized and updated. Organize phone-banking sessions for large events and rallies.
  • Help to create a database of trainers, speakers, and community groups, and facilitate bringing workshops and events to campus.
  • Bottom-line coordination of on-site logistics at events and actions (facility reservations, speaker schedules, food, equipment, etc.)
  • Help coordinate volunteers and activate membership to work on event organizing, publicity, and outreach.
  • Train other group members in the process for scheduling rooms, working with Student Development and Scheduling, utilizing student group resources, etc. Assist SFU campaigns in organizing events and actions.
  • Follow the criteria and process for co-sponsorship of events with community organizations that has been developed by SFU.. Update and revise the written form as necessary, communicate the criteria and process to outside groups, and ensure our liabilities as a student group are conveyed.
  • Keep SFU members and contacts informed about campus and community events through updating the office calendar, and sending weekly "Upcoming Events" e-mails to the listserv. The coordinator should attend Student Development Cluster meetings, and other group meetings when possible to help build connections, keep informed about events, and let others know what's going on with SFU.

Level of Responsibility :
This position will carry a .75 level of responsibility. The position impacts a moderate number of students at Portland State University. Accountability is high because the consequences of weak performance are great for students and community members who participate in activities of this organization, and the Coordinator's role in working with the organization to organize educational events and effective actions.

Expectation of Time:
The level of expected time for this position is .75, which averages 18-24 hours per week. A minimum of four regularly scheduled office hours must be posted and maintained. This position will work irregular and inconsistent hours that will be determined by the needs of the various constituencies served; a larger time commitment may be necessary when events and conferences are being put together. Satisfactory performance will be judged according to the extent to which the duties and responsibilities outlined above are fulfilled, regardless of the number of hours actually worked.

The Pre-Law Society is an organization run by students for students who have come to the society from varying backgrounds and from diverse majors, all with one goal in mind. Acceptance into law school.

The Pre-Law Society is currently looking for officers for the 2008-2009 academic school year. The following positions are open: Officer of Community Outreach, Officer of Marketing, Webmaster.

Officer of Community Outreach:
The Community Outreach Coordinator's responsibilities include, but are not limited to: planning events and meetings, reporting community events that are sponsored by the LSAC, LSAT, and/or the American Bar Association, generating ideas for fundraisers, interacting with possible guest speakers and introducing leads to the Pre-Law Society.

Officer of Marketing:
The Marketing responsibilities include, but are not limited to: planning events and meetings, preparing flyers and cooperating with the SALP for distribution, maintaining contact with Faculty about upcoming events and marketing appropriately, creating and developing the Pre-Law Society newsletter to be given to the Webmaster for posting

Webmaster:
The Webmaster's responsibilities include, but are not limited to: planning events and meetings, updating the website as needed, posting the Newsletter prepared by the Marketing officer, communicating web needs to the USS and or OIT. The Webmaster shall post minutes of meetings which will be recorded by the Secretary.

~ Portland State Professional Sound

The Portland State Professional Sound is a Student Fee Funded student organization that programs national and local music for the PSU campus community, as well as provides sound support for various activities across campus. This organization has a long history of being very active and is involved with many activities across campus. PSPS is considered a service organization. The Sound Technician positions are open to all currently enrolled Portland State University students carrying at least eight undergraduate credits or six graduate credit hours per term.

Educational Value Through guidance and instruction received from the Production Coordinator, the Sound Technicians will master skills in sound production and its subsequent technical requirements, sound production on a large scale, as well as networking with other sound professionals in the community.

Expectation of Time - This position is funded for 10-15 hours per week. The Sound Technician must be available to work on during the Noon Gigs - Wednesdays and Fridays from 11am - 2pm and various evening events as scheduled.

Duties and Responsibilities: · Trains on set up and running of sound equipment weekly (this can include reading manuals, stage plots, etc.) · Works the Wednesday and Friday noon gigs (Fall - Spring) and Tuesday and Thursday noon gigs (Summer) from 10:30am - 2:00pm. · Works evening gigs as assigned or volunteered.

Sound Technicians will learn to use the production equipment, the goal being to reach the point of mastery and to understand every aspect of event production. The Sound Technicians report directly to the Production Coordinator.
