Attractions on Steens Mountain

(1) Kiger Gorge Overlook - A spectacular view of a half-mile deep, U-shaped canyon carved during the Ice Age. Occasionally elk can be seen high in the gorge.

(2) East Rim Overlook - Rocky outcrops and a peek at the Alvord Desert, a dizzying vertical mile below your feet. Bighorn sheep can be spotted in the rugged cliffs of the east face.

(3) Wildhorse Lake Overlook - A short walk brings you to a breathtaking view of a small, secret hanging valley. A mile-long scramble for the sure-footed hiker, Wildhorse Lake sparkles far below.

(4) Big Indian Gorge Overlook - A glimpse into a deep canyon with hidden waterfalls, aspen stands, and meadows. A hiking trail begins a few miles below this overlook, near South Steens Campground.

(5) Steens Summit - After a half-mile walk, you will stand on the highest point of Steens Mountain at 9,733 feet. Views of hanging valleys, Wildhorse Lake, and in the distance, bright Mann Lake.

(6) Little Blitzen Gorge Overlook - A short path overflowing with wild flowers leads to a peaceful overlook of the canyon and river. A hiking trail begins a few miles below this overlook, near South Steens Campground.

(7) Fish Lake - A popular campground and recreation area located in an aspen grove. Enjoy fishing, picnicking, and boating (no motors) at this cool, high elevation spot.

(8) Lily Lake - A small, scenic pond that's on its way to becoming a meadow. Surrounded by aspens, Lily Lake is slowly filling in with sediments and lily pads.

(9) Aspen on Steens Mountain - In the fall, Steens Mountain turns the colors of fire and sunshine. The best places to look for these aspens are Jackman Park Campground and overlooking Fish Creek Canyon.
