Malheur Field Station

The Malheur Field Station is located on the northern end of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, 35 miles (58.3 km) south of Burns and about 30 miles north of Steens Mountain.  The field station sits on 187,000 acres in Oregon's high desert and is in the northern part of the Great Basin and Range.  The surrounding area, at an elevation of 4200 feet, offers a diverse setting of desert, wetlands, and mountains.  Visitors have the opportunity to witness a spectacular array of birds, plants, stunning geological landscapes and incredible dark night skies.

The Malheur Field station is an environmental educational research center dedicated to the concept that learning is a life-long process.  The station was constructed in the 1960's as a Youth Job Corps Center.  The facility is leased by the refuge to a consortium of northwest universities that operate it as a regional environmental education center with room and board.  The field station accommodates not only those who are staying for short visits, but also those interested in a wide-range of classes and programs aimed at educating the public in the cultural or natural history of the region.

For those interested in visiting the field station, you can look forward to the station having rustic, clean, dormitory-style accommodations, an on-site dining hall, a gymnasium and a visitors center.
