Introduction: This website was created
by students at Portland State University in the Fall of 2000 and Spring
of 2001. It can be used for research and information about the Steens Mountain
area, a breathtaking, ecologically diverse region in
the southeastern corner of Oregon. Steens Mountain has been featured
in recent news articles due to innovative efforts to make it a federally
protected cooperative management area. The region is rich in geology, history,
and wildlife, and it offers abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation
enthusiasts. There are many unique geological and historical sites
to see as you travel around the mountain, and the nearby Malheur Wildlife
Refuge is a renowned birding area. The Steens Mountain area can be
perhaps best explored from the Great Basin Society's Malheur Field Station,
which is located in the refuge. Feel free to explore this website
using the links provided at left, or via the Site Map at bottom left.
Enjoy!
