Resilience

Resiliency is the ability of a system to adjust to and cope with stresses and return to normal functioning.

  • not just resistance to stress
  • doesn't have to return to exactly the same condition

A measure of resilience is how far the system can be stressed and still return to normal functioning. A "ball and cup" metaphor is often used for this.

Resiliency would be the distance that the ball can move and still return to it's original spot.

stable ball and cup -stable
metastable ball and cup - metastable
edge of threshold ball and cup - threshold
