Dissipation zones

human activities disturb the natural fabric/mosaic of nature

(these are the same thing)

over-connectedness of human activities within landscape

disrupt connectedness of natural areas

habitat fragmentation

one way we do this is by focusing too much energy (power density)

in excess of the ability of natural systems to respond

road cuts, highways, dams

pesticides, forest clearing

introduction of livestock

all of these are subsidized by the external economy or the government directly

energy subsidies - not paying the externalities or full price

logging, for example leads to net negative income for many countries (but they need the cash)

What Denzel Ferguson calls "The three Cs" - cars, chainsaws and cows

Zones of energy dissipation

Social implications

Adams (1988) talks about how society is organized around the energy density and dissipation
