Unit 4 - Application Assignment

Points: 5

Examining Issues Relating to Sustainable Cities from Multiple Views

These instructions are more detailed than previous application assignments. A short list of what is required is given at the end.

Part 1: Select 3 views to analyze the case study. We have presented 5 possible views in the course that could be applied to this problem (systems, games, choice, and institutions). Each view will highlight different aspects of the case study. For example, we examined the history of Easter Island from the systems view to highlight the details about population growth and resource consumption. If we would have selected a different view to start with, such as the institutional view, we might have highlighted the sets of rules that the Easter Islanders' created.

Select a view and then create a list of features that this view highlights in the case study.

Do this separately for any three of the views.

Part 2: Compare the views. After you have identified features that are highlighted by your selected views, examine them for features that are similar, complementary or dissonant. You shouldn't expect any of the features to be contradictory because you are examining the same case study, just from different angles.

Part 3: Evaluate the synthesis of the views that you have created. Do the three views you chose give you a better picture of the issues than just one view? If so, in what way is your understanding of the problem enhanced?
