Registration

It is your responsibility to verify that you are in the correct section, either undergraduate or graduate.

Grading policy

You must attend at least 7 out of the 9 seminars to get a grade.
"Attendance" means that you were there at the beginning and at the end to turn in your "question card".

"Attendance" means attending to the course, i.e. paying attention and focusing only on the speaker.

Graduate students in ESM 507 must also write a short paper (about a page - 500 words) that compares the message of two of the speakers. This will be due by Wednesday of finals week.

No late work will be accepted.

In class computer/wireless device policy

Professional behavior requires that you are attending to the business of this meeting.

It is unprofessional to be processing emails or other unrelated work tasks.

It is a violation of the spirit of the course for you to use your device for personal reasons. This is the same as if you stepped out into the hall and had a chat with one of your friends during class.

You may check your cell phones but not answer (unless it's an emergency) during the period of the class.

If we use email or Twitter during the class, you will have to register your email or Twitter handle with me. You will be able to opt out of this option by using a paper card.

General syllabus information

Please see these links for other information in the General ESM Syllabus and Communication Policy.

but let me stress several items:

    • Don't bring your germs or your kid's germs to class (including viruses). This is a tight space.
    • Only student in the class can submit work, but the terms of the syllabus. You may not submit a card for someone else or have somebody do that for you. That is misrepresentation.
    • Use language that is respectful to other students and the speaker. This is an open forum and it is important to allow and encourage all points of view. The instructor has the duty to restate any questions or comments that are not in the spirit of the class.
