Workshop 2: Water pumping technology

General topics and schedule:

  • estimating the amount of water needed for a household
  • basic types and operations of water pumps
    • surface vs. submersible
    • centrifugal (high flow, cheap, low head)
    • positive displacement (lower flow, more pressure, higher efficiency)
  • fixed power (battery or AC)
  • variable power: solar panel + controller - no battery
  • measuring pump characteristics
    • practice with bilge pumps
    • flow rate vs. head chart
    • voltage / current / flow rat
  • matching solar potential to use
  • controls
    • level switch
    • dry run protection
    • pressure switch
    • floating valve or switch
  • pipes and tanks

Notes for class:

You might want to review the solar panel and sizing notes from last time.
