Extremely Thin Absorber Solar Cell
The extremely-thin absorber cell
uses nano-or microstructured
substrates to implement extremely
thin absorbers in photovoltaics.
Thin absorbers reduce the path
length of excited electrons and
holes. The structured substrates
permit for improved optical
absorption.
(collaboration with K. Ernst
and A. Belaidi)
A first approach to the eta-cell
concept involved a 150nm thick
CdTe absorber on nano-porous
TiO2 substrates. This cell gave
0.7 V as open- circuit voltage and
8.7 mA/cm2 short-circuit current.
Alloying with Hg recently
improved the cell current to 15
mA/cm2.
