Course Description
This class is for students who may have little or no background with
computers or the Internet, but who have a strong motivation to participate
in international communication. The course will:
- improve English language skills, using the
computer as a tool;
- provide practice in reading/listening to world news;
- prepare students to communicate through e-mail;
- present techniques for searching on the Internet;
- prepare students to write web pages using Netscape Navigator 3.0;
- provide an overview of scanning images and formatting graphics for
the WWW;
- familiarize students with hypertext technology;
- give students practice with the layout and design of web pages.
Class Objectives
By the end of the term, students should:
- be able to send e-mail messages, attach files to e-mail messages, forward
e-mail, send e-mail to more than one person, transfer information from
e-mail messages to word processing programs and vice-versa;
- be able to successfully search the Internet using a World Wide Web
(WWW) browser;
- be able to define what the Internet is, how it works, and how it got
started using appropriate basic vocabulary;
- have a personal web page uploaded to
the WWW with graphics and hyper-links.
Grades
Grades will be based on participation/performance in the following areas:
- Quizzes
- In-Class Assignments (e-mail activities, WWW research/evaluation)
- Homework
- Initiative
- Besides the class work your instructor gives you, you will have a chance
to choose some work for yourselves. If you really want an "A",
you will need to put in some extra effort.
- Each project must be turned in with a completed self-evaluation form
which will include a description of the project, the amount of time spent
on the project, and an analysis of its usefulness. ONE HUNDRED POINTS will
earn you a score of 100% in the area of initiative. One hour of focused,
quality effort is approximately equal to ten points. See your instructor
for further suggestions.
- Attendance
- Attendance is required. If you miss class, you are responsible for
all the information you miss. You can view the notes and assignments for
each week on the Notes
page.
- You can contact the instructor by e-mail or by
telephone or by talking to him before or after class.
