If you do not have access to the Web you can make requests for Social Security information, cards, earnings and benefits estimates by toll-free telephone 1-800-772-1213.
Also, if you are not satisfied and/or SSA determines that you are not eligible for benefits, seek legal assistance promptly and let Social Security know in writing that you wish to appeal their decision. You have 60 days from the time you receive SSA's decision to file an appeal. Social Security has four levels of appeal, and it is not uncommon for initial decisions to be overturned.
Free or low-cost legal help is available
to older people through Legal Services, whose staff is experienced
in Social Security's appeal process. To find out about the closest
Legal Services office call the Eldercare Locator, a toll free
telephone service to help older persons and their families
locate community services anywhere in the United States and
its territories. The Eldercare Locator will provide you with
the telephone number(s) of the appropriate state or local
agency that provides legal assistance. You may call the
Eldercare Locator's toll free number at:
1 (800)677-1116, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. (Eastern Time).
