The Senior Adult Learning Center (SALC) at Portland State University is a vital and growing part of the lives of older adults in the Portland, Oregon area. Mandated by the State of Oregon and founded in 1973, the SALC is a unit of the Institute on Aging, School of Community Health, College of Urban and Public Affairs. SALC exists to enhance the quality of life of older people through offering opportunities for continuous learning, intellectual enrichment, leadership, fellowship and personal growth within the university setting. It is funded mainly through the contributions of program participants. Please call the SALC office in order to make a contribution to the program.

The SALC has two components: Tuition-Free Auditing, and Retired Associates cultural and social activities.

The Tuition-Free Auditing Program is a gateway to lifelong learning and offers Oregon residents an opportunity to enhance their later years. The program involves advising and registering people 65 years of age and older as auditors in any of PSU's regular classes, on a space available basis with no tuition. Staff advise seniors about courses and services available, and register them for classes at the SALC office. A few classes may require a materials fee, which should be paid at the Cashier's Office. There are no education level requirements for this program. Seniors are able to audit university classes while younger students benefit from experiences and insights of older students. The registration confirmation slip issued to the senior auditors at the time of registration serves as the passport to the many opportunities awaiting elders at PSU. Seniors with a registration confirmation slip are eligible to receive a PSU email account, make use of the PSU library, the PSU computer labs, and the PSU physical education facilities. They are also able to get discounted ticketsa for any of PSU's athletic events and campus films offered at the Fifth Avenue Cinema. The SALC is supported mainly through voluntary contributions. The Retired Associates of PSU (RAPSU) is a membership organization for people of retirement age. The group meets twice a month fall, winter and spring terms on the campus of PSU for programs of intellectual stimulation and fellowship. RAPSU is a member organization open to anyone aged 50 and older, and is led by officers elected annually by the membership. The RAPSU program takes advantage of the many resources offered at PSU and the cultural institutions located nearby. A newsletter announces monthly programs and items of interest to the members. Meetings are held on campus in the Multicultural Room (228) Smith Memorial Student Union. There is a social gathering with cookies and coffee at 12:30 PM. The presentations from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM include topics of current interest by PSU and other faculty, community leaders, artists and performers, and national and international speakers and researchers. The first Thursday of December and the first Thursday of June are no-host luncheon meetings. Visitors are always welcome to attend the meetings and the luncheons. Membership fees are $15/year for an individual and $25/year for couples. Call the SALC office at 503-725-4739 for a RAPSU membership application or visit the Retired Associates of PSU Web site.

Travel the Information Highway

SALC students who are enrolled in the current term may obtain an account on the academic computing system called ODIN. They then can access the Internet, send and receive e-mail, cruise the World Wide Web, use on-campus computers or hook up via modem to their home computer. To obtain a Senior Citizen's Internet Account, take the SALC registration receipt obtained when signing up for classes, along with any photo ID, to the Help Desk in Room 18 of Smith Memorial Student Union. To find out how to set up your home computer to be able to connect to the Internet via PSU Click Here.

Check Out Books from PSU's Library

Over 90,000 volumes and 11,100 subscriptions and serials are available to satisfy the intellectual appetite of enrolled senior students. Circulating books and periodicals can be checked out for a three-week period. To check out books, present the SALC registration confirmation slip.

Physical Education Facilities:

SALC students can register for any regularly scheduled physical education course that is offered at PSU. They can use the Peter W. Stott Center (PSC) for physical fitness activities by paying a fee for a locker room basket or a locker. Those who are not interested in a regular physical education course, but still want to make use of the gym facilities, should ask for an "open recreation" schedule each term from the physical education office located in Room 212 PSC. The schedule lists the times that the pool and other gym facilities are open and available.

On-Line Database Resources

The PSU library has many on-line databases available including the PORTALS program that can connect the SALC student to databases all over the world as well as locally, and across the region and the nation.

Security Escort and Other CSSO Services

Staffed by trained officers, emloyees and volunteers, the Campus Safety and Security Office (CSSO) provides escorts 24 hours a day every day of the year, within a two block radius of PSU's campus. The service is especially useful to seniors attending evening classes providing escorts to a car or bus stop and staying with the students until they are safely on their way. Call 503-725-4407 for information about escort, first-responder medical assistance, and other services.

Computer Lab Access

Computer Labs are located on the first floor of Shattuck Hall and the first floor of the Millar Library. By showing your SALC registration receipt, the lab staff can assist you with the IBM and MacIntosh computers.
