HW5
1. Calculate the Compton
shifts for experiments with individual helium atoms (of the most abundant kind)
that move very very slowly (as in a laser cooled gas that is trapped), for wavelengths
of 1 nm, 10 pm and 1 mm, and for an angle from the direction of the incoming
radiation of 20 degrees. (2 points). Which kind of
radiation would you prefer for these experiments - and most importantly - for
what reason(s)? (3 points)
2. Derive the quantization conditions for the radii of the
stable (not radiating) orbits in the Bohr model of the hydrogen atom. State
clearly what you assume at the start of your derivation and show every
step of the derivation to get full credit. (5 points)
