Letter of Reflective

Entering into third term of Freshman Inquiry Class was wonderful and I knew that it would help me through out my life. In first and second term, this class helped me a lot and that I felt more confidence in spring term. Before taking this class, my writing skills were so bad. Whenever I wrote my reports, the results were unsatisfying. That was the reason why I was taking this class. I feel that it will help me through the coming years. I believe that being able to write is an accomplishment half the distance through the road of success.
My writing was so poor; I could not even read it over to myself because I would feel embarrassed and ashamed of my writing. It was hard for me to put my hands on a keyboard or on the piece of paper.  Second term of Freshman Inquiry class was a surprise for me because the assignments were twice as much as the first term.  I had so many things to catch up, included reading, researching and so on.  I thought that I could not survive in there.  As I kept working hard in the class, at the end I saw the results of my essays have improved slightly.  I believe that all my energy and effort that I put in class has started to show.

Once entering third term of Freshman Inquiry class was even more surprise for me.  The assignments were a lot more than the second term. Group projects, reader responses, research papers, and individuals’ essays give me many struggled situations. But I believe that as year’s progress, things will get more and more difficult.  I kept telling myself to work hard and patient on what I had to do, these will lead me success. I did the same thing as in winter term by setting early due schedules on the assignments.  I went to Writing Center for help to revising and organizing my papers. I tried to make appointment with the mentor peers.  I also wait to get help from Jamie as well.  Many times, I did not understand what the assignment meant, so I formed a study group with my fellow students.  Sometimes, I called them at night or got together to work on our assignments by using the same help tools and materials from last term.  I felt that study group outside of class helped me more because in class lectures I could not pick up all the information that was given to me.  As a result, I would discuss with my classmates about who got what information and we exchange the differences.  And then we helped each other on how to start our papers. The most difficulty that I had was that I did not understand what they wanted me to do on the assignments or what they are all meant.  This outside group helped me a lot.

Beginning the subject of Knowledge, Art and Power in spring term was wonderful. They are all intertwining in our life one way or another. Taking this class has given me an opportunity to realize more that reading is important and is a great knowledge that everyone shall have.  We are not just reading books for fun or for somewhat a requirement; our goals are to understand the meanings, the points, and also the important purposes behind the sense.  People in all types of life should have knowledge. Such as, one is born into a poor or rich society; they should at least be exposed to some forms of knowledge because later in their lives, they will use this skill to enhance their future. Knowledge is the greatest treasure that God has given to everyone, so they should absorb or be exposed to it.  Having knowledge is like having power and infinite treasures.

At the end of this term, the results of my essays have improved a lot.  I believe the energy and efforts that I have put in this class throughout the year have shown.  The ability, energy, formal essays, reader responses, my web page, plus the good attendance in class, I have a confidence that I would get an A for this term.  I would like to thank Jamie, Rebecca, the Writing Center, mentor peers, and the study group so much for helping and lighting my knowledge during this first year in Portland State University.
