The course objective that we decided to follow is a spring term objective: “Offer a sense of

surprise to others in what they overlook in everyday life through a collaboration of the visual and the

verbal interplay of images and words in a photojournalism project”.  Our group has seen that the

gentrification of Burnside has been and is a slow process, with many unseen events and changed that

have been overlooked changes have important repercussions to the business and people in the area,

and the character of Old-Town Portland.  Some of the changes we have captured are the decline of

small businesses and their replacement by larger corporations and coglomerat4es.  The character of

the area is being lost as the personalities and individuality of the smaller businesses are being forced

out of the area by the raised rents and “business standards” of the larger companies.  These changes

may go unnoticed in “everyday life”, but the power struggles will determine the future of the area.
