What does Rodriquez mean when he says, “He (a scholarship boy) cannot afford to admire his parents”

Richard Rodriquez was an excellent student. He went to school and studied hard to success, his mind only focus on school and get more educated. Parents are the best of all that been support us through out to our life, we should gradually thanks to them. There is no word that could describe how much that we should thankful. Rodriquez also wants to limit us to where we are, we shouldn’t be foul around with the high promotion that we received. We shouldn’t forget where are from and who we are. We should be ourselves with our cultures and life styles. We should not loose any of these, but we should gain more and know more every parts of the world.

Richard Rodriquez felt he couldn’t admire his parents because he was embarrassed and ashamed of them. They don’t talk like everyone else talks and they’re not as intellectual as his teachers are. These feelings of his made him lose respect for them, and it pushed him into his own world; a world where he can be recognized through his studying and his books. He wanted to show everyone, and especially himself, that he can do it. He can be best of students. Then he realizes that leaves his family, because he didn’t have enough time with them. Now he wants to get close to them just like they were when they first came here.
